Raiders Win Shootout in Lacrosse Tournament Game

Watertown’s boys lacrosse team defeated visiting Marian 22-19 in a high scoring state tournament game at Victory Field on Wednesday. The Raiders’ offense was led by Matt Donnell and Jason Hughes, who each tallied hat tricks. The high scorer in the game was Marian’s Brendan Walsh who netted 8 goals. Eight-seeded Watertown (9-8) will travel to face No. 1 seeded Dover-Sherborn (14-3) for the MIAA Div.

Watertown Lacrosse Teams Ready for State Tournament

It’s tourney time for the Raiders boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams.For the second year in a row both of Watertown High School’s lacrosse teams will play in the MIAA state tournament. The girls team earned a first round bye in the East Section Div. 2 tournament, and will travel for the quarterfinal game. The fifth-seeded Raiders finished 13-3, and will take on fourth-seeded Dartmouth (16-2) Wednesday, May 28 at 4 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Dartmouth. The boys got the eighth-seed in the Central/East Section Div.

Watertown’s League Champs Celebrated at School Committee

Watertown High School enjoyed an amazing winter sports season – perhaps the most historic winter in school history – and the success was celebrated this week at the School Committee meeting. Four teams displayed five banners earned this winter on the basketball court and ice hockey rink. Watertown High School Athletic Director Michael Lahiff said this is the first time in his memory that four teams – boy’s and girl’s basketball and boy’s and girl’s ice hockey – have won the Middlesex League title. “It may be the first time in Middlesex League history,” Lahiff said. “I don’t know.

Members of the Watertown High School boy’s lacrosse team took the field last week with a special honor for fallen Boston Firefighter and Watertown native Edward Walsh. The team all put the message “LT. EW 33” on a piece of athletic tape and put it on their helmets during the game against Belmont. Lt. Walsh graduated from Watertown High School in 1989 and worked on Boston Engine 33 when he died fighting a fire in the Back Bay. Click here to see a video about the tribute on NESN’s website.

A battle between two teams linked through history and circumstance needed overtime to decide, and the outcome for Watertown proved to be a tough one to digest. The Raiders seemed to have Cardinal Spellman on the ropes during the Div.

Watertown’s Girl’s Basketball Comeback Falls Short in Lowell

Watertown captain Gabriella Coppola walked up and took the North Section runners-up trophy Saturday but she could not even muster a grin after the game against Arlington Catholic in Lowell on Saturday. For the second straight season the Raiders’ season ended in the section final. While the 2013 appearance at Tsongas Center was unexpected, this year Watertown was top seed and came in with a 21-1 record.

The Raiders will return to a familiar place after a three year hiatus after Watertown defeated Stoneham 48-34 in the MIAA Div. 3 North Section final at the Tsongas Center on Saturday. Watertown is heading to the TD Garden in Boston for the EMass final on Tuesday. On Saturday in Lowell, senior point guard Cesar Fulcar and sophomore guard Brednan Hoban led the way for the Raiders, with 15 and 14 points respectively.

With the Watertown girl’s basketball team’s 51-39 victory over Hamilton-Wenham on Thursday night in Chelmsford, the Raiders set up a big day for Watertown hoops fans on Saturday. Both the boy’s and girl’s teams will play for North Section championships at the Tsongas Center in Lowell on March 8. The girl’s team, now 21-1, is the top seed in the North Section Div. 2 bracket. The Raiders face third-seeded Arlington Catholic (19-4) at 2 p.m. in Lowell.
