Watertown’s runners and swimmers competed at the state level this weekend, showing they could compete with the best in the Bay State. Cross Country
The Watertown girls and boys cross country teams ran in the MIAA Div. 2 meet in Gardner on Saturday, and a sophomore placed among the top finishers. Anna Lonergan finished in eighth place in the girls Div. 2 race.
Charlie BreitroseThe Watertown Field Hockey Team celebrates its Final Four berth after beating Dover-Sherborn on Saturday at Victory Field. Four goals by sophomore Molly Driscoll led Watertown in its 6-0 defeat of Dover-Sherborn in Saturday’s MIAA Div. 3 Round of Eight Field Hockey Tournament game. The Raiders added another trophy to its vast collection of awards with Saturday morning’s win at Victory Field. With the MIAA doing away with the sections, the Raiders got a trophy for making the Final Four.
Charlie BreitroseWatertown freshman Caroline Andrade scored her first varsity goal in the Raiders’ 6-0 State Tournament win over Oakmont on Wednesday. Watertown’s round-of-16 State Tournament game against Oakmont was over by the end of the first quarter, as the Raiders beat the Spartans 6-0 at Victory Field on Wednesday afternoon. Two Watertown players collected a pair of goals, and one player scored her first varsity goal in the MIAA Div. 3 State Tournament game. DOVER — Watertown High School’s run of wins came to an end in the first round of the MIAA Div. 5 Football Playoffs, with a 21-7 loss at Dover-Sherborn. The Raiders (5-4) held the explosive Dover-Sherborn (8-1) offense scoreless early in the game, forcing a punt on the first drive and the second ending in a missed field goal.

The undefeated Raiders (18-0) are seeded second in the MIAA Div.
Charlie BreitroseThe last time Watertown High School made the MIAA football playoffs in 2017 the Raiders made it all the way to the State Semifinals against Dennis-Yarmouth. For the second week in a row the Watertown High School football team triumphed in overtime. Next up for the Raiders is a road state playoff game. The Raiders wrapped up their regular season schedule with a 29-23 overtime win at Melrose.
Charlie BreitroseWatertown Youth Hockey players practice at the John A. Ryan Arena. Watertown Youth Hockey will soon start its popular Learn to Skate program, and coaches hope that eventually the young skaters will move on to the youth hockey teams.
Watertown Youth Hockey has been around since the early 1970s, if not longer, said Watertown Youth Hockey President Jason Tourville, who also coaches in the program. A few years ago the program shrank when multiple players moved to other programs in the area, but a new generation is coming up through the program. There are some pros and cons about being a smaller program. “The upside is the community, you get to know each other,” Tourville said.
