Winter Offerings From the Watertown Recreation Department

Watertown’s Recreation Department has a variety of activities available this winter, and registration has opened. Programs include multiple sports for children, teens, and adults. Elementary students can also participate in crafts, robots, and CSI investigation programs, and middle schoolers have a robotics course. The Recreation Department will also run February Vacation programs for grades K-5 and 6-8. See the full list of programs and more details in the brochure by clicking here.

Registration Open for Watertown Recreation’s Winter Programs

The Watertown Recreation Department Winter I Registration for all offerings has begun, and includes sports, crafts, science and more for children as young as 3 to adults. The sports programs include Junior Mighty Mites and Mighty Mites, for pre-schoolers, and Jr. All Sport and All Sports for elementary school students. Three are volleyball, futsal, and wrestling for students, and adult pickleball, basketball, and volleyball. Plus the Wachusett Ski Program is back for middle and high schoolers. Not into sports, there are crafting classes, a non-bake bonanza, and science programs: Outer Space & Physics Fun, Electricity & Magnetmania, and Code & Control Robo Dozer.

Registration Open for Watertown Recreation’s Wachusett Ski & Snow Board Program

The Watertown Department announced that registration has opened for the Wachusett Mountain ski and snowboard program. A bus runs from Watertown to the ski area on Saturdays in early 2024. The following information came from Watertown Recreation:

Who:    Grades 6 – 12

When:  Saturday Evenings

             January 6th – February 10, 2024 (Once a week for six weeks)

Time:    4:00 – 11:00 pm

Where:  Bus leaves at 4:00 pm, SHARP, from the temporary Watertown High School parking lot, 27 Westminster Ave. Fees:   Register online with Wachusett Mountain at their website www.wachusett.com/schoolgroups for lift ticket, equipment, and lessons. Registration starts on 10/26/23 and ends on 12/15/23.

Watertown Summer Basketball League Trophy Awarded, A 60-Year Tradition

Members of the Donohue’s Kaos Club posed triumphantly with the championship trophy Tuesday night after capturing the Watertown Summer Basketball League championship, defeating the squad that won the title last year. The league has been operating in Watertown for six decades, most of which were played in the outdoor court in Saltonstall Park next to the Watertown Boys & Girls Club. Donohue’s Kaos Club defeated New Day 67-49 in Game 3 of the Papas Elite League Finals. New Day forced the deciding third game by winning Game 2 in overtime on Aug.

Watertown Rec: Beat the Heat on Waterslides, Family Movie Night, Street Hockey & Tennis

Watertown Recreation has plenty going on for kids this summer, including a waterslide event at Victory Field on July 7, a Family Movie Night on the 14th, and the Cops N Rec Street Hockey program begins July 10. Former Recreation Director Tom Sullivan Has Left His Mark on Watertown’s Parks and Youth

Charlie BreitroseRecreation Department staff current and past: (from left) current Director Peter Centola, Assistant Director Ernie Thebado and former Director Tom Sullivan. From a young age, Tom Sullivan had an interest in parks, athletic fields and gyms. He even took detours on trips to get a closer look at something at a park in another community that caught his eye. On May 3, 1973, Sullivan walked into his office on the top floor of Town Hall (where the Planning Department is now), to start his career as Watertown Recreation Director. He served in that position for 36 years, and continues to lend a hand and provide advice 50 years later. Sullivan had worked for three years at what was known as the Waltham Boys Club prior to taking the job in Watertown.

Registration Available for Recreation Dept.’s Winter II Session

Sports, robots, adult programs and more are available during the Watertown Recreation Department’s Winter II session. Registration has opened for the session, which runs from Feb. 27 to April 16. Sports for kids include basketball, volleyball, floor hockey, wrestling, whiffleball, and all-sports, which includes several different sports. Science focused activities include Chemical Creations, robots, and Bridges & Buildings.
