Watertown Rolls Past Lynnfield in North Section Basketball Quarterfinal

LYNNFIELD – The Raiders went into a hostile and steamy gym at Lynnfield High School for Saturday’s Div. 3 North boys basketball quarterfinal and made it look easy in a 62-44 victory over the hosts, despite being a much lower seed. 

Leading Watertown on both sides of the ball was senior guard Julio Fulcar, who was the team’s high scorer and had the assignment to guard Lynnfield’s best player, point guard Billy Arseneault.

Watertown head basketball coach Steve Harrington knew that the Pioneers wanted to run the ball. “They’re ability to run starts with the point guard,” Harrington said. “Fulcar – never mind his 31 or whatever [he finished with 32 points] – his job on defense was knowing where (Arsenault) was at all times.” The No.

Watertown Basketball Team Dominates in First Round State Tourney Win

The Watertown High School boys basketball team came out for warmups for the first round State Tournament game Tuesday night wearing shirts emblazoned with “#SLEEPER.” After the 77-32 win over Essex Tech, however, it will hard for opponents not to take notice of the Raiders. 

Senior center John Korte said the shirts were inspired by Boston Herald high school sports writer Danny Ventura, who called the Raiders a sleeper in the MIAA Div. 3 North bracket. “It was kind of a fireback, because we think we are the best team in D3 North and we wanted to show that, like we did tonight,” Korte said. “And, also, I feel like outside Watertown people don’t really believe in us to be able to go very far –especially with the seventh seed.”

Watertown Boys Basketball Team Grabs Home Game in First Round of State Tourney

As Watertown High School’s boys basketball team tries to return to the State Semifinal for a second straight year, the Raiders will host a first round game in the MIAA State Tournament on Tuesday. 

The Raiders, who finished 14-6, earned the seventh seed in the Div. 3 North Section bracket, which was released Friday. Watertown will host 10th seed Essex Tech (10-10) at 7 p.m. on Feb. 27. The winner of the Watertown-Essex Tech game will likely face second seeded Lynnfield (17-3), which takes on Swampscott in the first round.

Watertown Seniors Close Field Hockey Careers on Top; Raiders Add Ninth Straight Title, 18th Total

After winning the MIAA Div. 2 Field Hockey State Championship on Saturday 5-1 over Oakmont, Watertown High School’s four seniors reflected on the year, and their careers for the Raiders. The seniors were part of some major accomplishments, Watertown field hockey coach Eileen Donahue said earlier in the week during a ceremony when seniors Jonna Kennedy and Maddie Leitner signed their letters of intent to play in college. Donahue noted that they were part of the team to set the nation’s longest unbeaten streak in high school field hockey two years ago, and this year they were there when the team finally lost after more than eight years. Ask the coach or her players, however, and the streak was not a big focus or even a topic of discussion.

No Stopping Watertown – Field Hockey Team Claims Ninth Straight State Title

WORCESTER – Coming into the MIAA Div. 2  Field Hockey State Final the crowd for Oakmont and others believed this was the year to beat Watertown, but as the final seconds drained away it was the Raiders celebrating a State Championship – for the ninth straight year. The final was a rematch of 2016 when Watertown narrowly defeated the Spartans, 4-3. This year the Raiders had lost a game for the first time in more than eight years and only won their last two tournament games by a goal apiece. Saturday morning, however, Watertown put its offense into high gear and won 5-1 at WPI.

Watertown Football Tourney Run Halted by Tough Dennis-Yarmouth Team

MEDFORD – Watertown High School’s magical run through the MIAA Football tournament came to a crashing halt Friday evening as they fell 41-3 to Dennis-Yarmouth in the Eastern Mass. final at Hormel Stadium. The game did not start well. After getting a first down, Watertown junior quarterback Nick McDermott was sacked. The next play, he was intercepted and it would have been returned for a touchdown if not for a penalty on D-Y.

When the Watertown High School field hockey team takes the field for the MIAA Div. 2 State Final Saturday it will be both in familiar and unfamiliar territory.

Watertown Swimmers Head to State Meet After Successful Sectionals

In its first year, the Watertown girls swim team will be competing at the MIAA State Swimming and Diving Championships this weekend. 

WHS has combined with the existing Arlington team to create a co-op team and the Arlington-Watertown squad has had some successes. Last weekend, the team competed in the North Section Meet at MIT and scored 40 points and placed 15th overall. “This is a huge improvement over last year’s team that finished 20th,” said head coach Adlar Su. Freshman Lily Barker, who is from Arlington, placed third in the 500 free with a time of 5:22.37 and ninth in the 100 free with a time of 51.55. Arlington-Watertown’s 200 free relay swam a 1:52.01, finished 12th and qualified for the State Meet.
