Pair of Watertown Men Pull Handgun Out of Charles River, Had Been Reported Stolen

Two men from Watertown pulled up a firearm from the depths of the Charles River last week. The handgun had been reported stolen. Patrick Rourke and Isaac Russo went out on a kayak and searched for metal objects on the river and they found something after just a few minutes, according to the report on WHDH Channel 7. They soon realized it was a real firearm. They contacted Watertown Police who notified the Massachusetts State Police, who have jurisdiction because the Charles falls under the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation.

Man Arrested on Charges of Assaulting a Woman Along the Charles River Path

A Newton man was arrested in connection to an assault of a woman that took place on the path along the Charles River in Watertown. Sandeep Khandke, 69, of Newton, was arraigned on Friday in Waltham District Court on a charge of indecent assault and battery on a person over 14, according to the Massachusetts State Police. The State Police received a report of an assault in Watertown on the Charles River Greenway, which is State property. Troopers from the Boston State Police Barracks responded. “The victim reported that a man with a cane had sat down next to her and while the two were talking, the man touched the victim’s leg and chest,” the State Police press release said.

Watertown Police Join Other Departments to Patrol Along Charles River

The Massachusetts State Police, Waltham Police Department, Watertown Police Department, and Newton Police Department, along with the Department of Conservation and Recreation, are partnering in a summer initiative to enhance safety along the Riverwalk and other parkland along the Charles River Upper Basin. Troopers and Officers this weekend will launch Project Safe Summer, a joint patrol initiative that recognizes the four police agencies’ shared responsibility to enhance public safety along this serene area popular with walkers, runners, cyclists, and nature lovers. Teams consisting of members from each of the four departments will patrol the Upper Basin parklands and work collaboratively to address quality-of-life issues and other public concerns. The joint teams will patrol the area at various times, supplementing existing regular patrols.

State Police Seek Suspect in Sexual Assault Reported Along the Charles River

The Massachusetts State Police sent out the following announcement:

Massachusetts State Police are investigating a reported sexual assault committed this afternoon on Greenough Boulevard in Watertown. A woman, who is in her 20s, reported that she was indecently assaulted by a man at approximately 2:45 p.m. while she was walking along the riverside roadway. The victim stated that the suspect rushed her from behind, grabbed her, and began to forcibly kiss her. The suspect continued to forcibly kiss the victim even as she told him to stop, tried to push him away, and tried to break free. At one point during the assault the suspect indecently touched the victim.

State Police, AAA Drop Watertown Tow Company After Driver Made Sexual Advances

A Watertown towing company will no longer be used by the Massachusetts State Police after one of its drivers allegedly made unwanted sexual advances toward a woman whose vehicle he was towing. Fox 25 reported that a woman called police after a tow driver picked her up on the Mass. Pike and drove her home along with her car. On the way the driver asked her to perform sexual acts, Fox 25 reported. The driver was from Watertown-based Perfection Towing.

Mt. Auburn Cemetery Evacuated While Police Searched for Suicidal Man

Police evacuated Mount Auburn Cemetery after receiving a report that there was a man threatening to commit suicide inside, but the search did not locate anyone. The call came in at 5:47 p.m. Wednesday evening, said Watertown Police Lt. Michael Lawn. “We got information from a third party caller (forwarded from State Police) about a suicidal man inside the cemetery by the Charles River,” Lawn said. “We ended up evacuating Mount Auburn Cemetery, but we found nothing.” Watertown Police were joined by Cambridge Police officers and Massachusetts State Police troopers in the search of the cemetery, which lies in Watertown and Cambridge.

Man Allegedly Steals Taxi in Watertown, Leads Chase on Mass Pike

A man who allegedly stole a taxi in Watertown did not stop until he reached Western Mass. and was stopped by Massachusetts State Police. Welbert Nasser, 29, of Woburn, reportedly took the cab in Watertown at about 3 a.m. Monday morning. He then got on the Mass Turnpike and later was spotted in Ashland by State Police, according to a report by WCVB Channel 5. Troopers tried to stop the car in Auburn, but it sped away at about 100 miles per hour.
