Applications Being Accepted for 51st Lt. Paul J. Sullivan Scholarship

Lt. Paul Sullivan was killed in Vietnam in 1968, and a scholarship in his name has been given out for 50 years. Organizers of the Lt. Paul J. Sullivan Scholarship sent out the following announcement:

The Lieutenant Paul J. Sullivan Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce the 51st annual Lt. Paul J. Sullivan Scholarship. The Scholarship Award of $5,000 will be awarded to a deserving high school senior to perpetuate Paul’s memory. There will also be awards for the other finalists. Last year, a total of $23,000 was awarded to ten young men and women.

Comcast Awards Watertown Grad Scholarship for Academics, Community Service

Watertown’s Kaitlin Tracy was one of 103 Massachusetts students to receive a 2018 Leaders and Achievers Scholarship. The program, funded by the Comcast Foundation, is a one-time, $1,000 scholarship awarded to the best and brightest high school seniors for their community service, academic performance and leadership skills. Since 2001, more than $28 million has been awarded to nearly 27,000 high school seniors across the country as part of the Leaders and Achievers Program. “Our Leaders and Achievers Scholarship winners are exceptional students who are committed to academic excellence and community service,” said Tracy Pitcher, Senior Vice President of Comcast’s Greater Boston Region. “We are honored to recognize their achievements and excited to support them as they continue their educational journeys.”

Comcast, joined by Lt. Governor Karyn Polito, recognized the students at a special event held at the Massachusetts State House today. Added Lt. Governor Polito, “Our administration is committed to helping students across the Commonwealth receive a quality, affordable education and we are pleased to have partners like Comcast assist in those efforts. We are proud of this year’s Leaders & Achievers Scholarship recipients for their community service, academic performance and leadership skills and look forward to their future growth and successes.”

The Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program provides scholarships to students who strive to achieve their full potential, who are catalysts for positive change in their communities, who are involved in their schools, and who serve as models for their fellow students.

Watertown Student Receives Nursing Scholarship from Mt. Auburn Hospital

Watertown’s Faryal Amin received a scholarship for nursing school from Mount Auburn Hospital, the hospital announced. Each year, Mount Auburn Hospital awards scholarships to local high school graduates from surrounding towns that are enrolled in Nursing School. Amin, a Watertown High School graduate and Watertown resident, recently received a scholarship from the hospital to study nursing at Regis College in the fall.

Each year, Mount Auburn Hospital awards scholarships to local high school graduates from surrounding towns that are enrolled in nursing school, and one of those receiving the scholarship was a Watertown student. Kelly Flynn, a Watertown High School graduate and Watertown resident, recently received a scholarship from Mount Auburn Hospital to study nursing at the University of Vermont in the fall.

Watertown High School Senior Earns College Scholarship

 

Watertown High School senior Eric Furtado got a financial boost for college from a local bank. To support members investing in their education, and in honor of former staff and volunteers, MIT Federal Credit Union awarded $1,000 Memorial Scholarships to accomplished students at their recent 75th Anniversary Celebration, held in conjunction with the Annual Business Meeting on April 21, 2015, according to the announcement from the bank. Recipients were selected based on essay content, grades, financial need and extracurricular & community activities. “We take pride in supporting a variety of communities at MIT, including young people investing in their education,” said MITFCU President/CEO Brian Ducharme. “In its ninth year it continues to be an honor to learn of these students’ accomplishments and present them with their awards at our Annual Meeting.”

Scholarship to be Awarded in Honor of Local Man Killed Vietnam

The Lt. Paul J. Sullivan Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce the 46th annual Lt. Paul J. Sullivan Scholarship. The Scholarship Award of $4,000 will be awarded to a deserving high school senior to perpetuate Paul’s memory. There will also be awards for the other finalists. Last year, a total of $17,000 was awarded to seven young men and women. Paul was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Watertown and a graduate of St. Mary’s High School in Waltham in 1961. He was a 1965 graduate of Boston College.  During those years he participated on many area athletic teams, most notably in the areas of basketball and baseball. He worked for the Watertown Recreation Department as a park instructor. After his college graduation, Paul taught at the West Jr. High School in Watertown and coached at Sacred Heart High School in Newton and St. Patrick’s High School in Watertown. He volunteered for the Army, graduating from OCS and Ranger training. He was sent to Vietnam in early July 1968 and was killed in combat on August 9, 1968. He left behind his wife, his family, and his friends, all of whom had been deeply touched by his life. 
This Scholarship was established in his memory by his family and friends to be awarded annually to that young person who best exemplifies the kind of person Paul was. Over the years, 47 young men and women have been recognized as recipients of the Lt. Paul J. Sullivan Scholarship and 184 other young people have received recognition and financial assistance as finalists. Thousands of dollars have gone to college scholarships, sponsorship of athletic teams, and support of programs for youth. Candidates may qualify for the scholarship if they belong to the following parishes:
