Charles River Chamber Scholarships Available, Expanded Beyond College

The following announcement was provided by the Charles River Regional Chamber:

The Charles River Regional Chamber is offering scholarship opportunities for up to four deserving students who either live in Needham, Newton, Watertown, or Wellesley and/or who attend school in Needham, Newton, Watertown, or Wellesley and who plan to attend an accredited program, community college, college or university in the next academic year. The student(s) selected will have a check (approximately $2,000) sent to their college or university to be applied toward tuition upon successfully completing their first semester. New this year, the chamber is expanding eligibility for a scholarship to include high school graduates who will be attending community colleges and other accredited post-secondary programs.

“We used to limit participation in our scholarship program to students attending a four-year college,” explained Charles River Chamber President and CEO Greg Reibman. “However, we’re expanding eligibility because we’ve come to recognize that there’s more than one path students can take to a fulfilling career, just as different jobs require different skills, knowledge, or credentials.” Selection will be made by a panel of local leaders who will review all applications completed by the submission deadline of March 29, 2024 at 5 p.m. Decisions will be made based on a combination of the application’s completeness and accuracy, letter of recommendation, and responses to essay questions.

Scholarship to be Awarded to Watertown Student by Charles River Chamber

The following announcement was provided by the Charles River Regional Chamber:

The Charles River Regional Chamber will be awarding a scholarship this spring to a graduating high school senior from Watertown. To qualify a student must either live in Watertown and/or attend school in Watertown.  The recipient will have a check (approximately $2,000) sent to their college or university to be applied toward tuition upon successful completion of their first semester. “The Chamber had been offering a scholarships to a high schoolers in Newton and Needham and Wellesley. We’re now adding Watertown to the mix, following our expansion into the community last summer,” said Chamber President Greg Reibman. With the expansion into Watertown, the Chamber has added Mike Albano, EVP & CFO at Mount Auburn Cemetery — who used to lead the former Watertown-Belmont scholarship program — to the scholarship selection committee.

Watertown Student Wins $20K College Scholarship from Thoreau Foundation

Watertown’s Daysia Charles won the $20,000 Henry David Thoreau Foundation Scholarship. The following announcement was provided by the Henry David Thoreau Foundation:

Daysia J. Charles, a student at the Academy of the Pacific Rim Charter Public School, will be entering college this autumn as a Thoreau Scholar. The scholarship, named for the 19th-century naturalist and author, Henry David Thoreau, is a prestigious award given annually to only eight Massachusetts high school seniors. The daughter of Yolanda Mclean, Daysia and her mother often walked through local arboretums discussing a wide range of topics. When her mother could not provide in-depth answers to Daysia’s many questions, together, they would theorize possible answers.

Watertown Student Awarded Highly Selective Scholarship to do Scientific Research

Middlebury CollegeBen Morris of Watertown has been named a 2021 Goldwater Scholar. The following announcement was provided by Middlebury College:

Ben Morris ’22, a molecular biology and biochemistry major from Watertown, Massachusetts, has been named a 2021 Goldwater Scholar by the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. The highly selective scholarship is awarded to sophomores and juniors planning research-focused careers in natural sciences, engineering, or mathematics who were nominated by their home institutions. This year, 410 students received the award from an estimated pool of 5,000 candidates. “The Goldwater Scholarship supports the next generation of outstanding researchers in math, science, and engineering,” said Lisa Gates, associate dean of fellowships and research at Middlebury.

Watertown Residents Can Apply for Scholarships to BB&N Summer Camp

The Watertown Recreation Department sent out the following announcement:

The Watertown Recreation Department is pleased to announce the offering of a limited number of scholarships for Watertown families whose children would like to attend the Buckingham Browne & Nichols Summer Camp. Each candidate must have a demonstrated and documented need for financial assistance or has a special circumstance that is considered exceptional. The Town of Watertown is grateful to the Buckingham Browne & Nichols School for offering this outstanding opportunity. The camp options are identified at https://bbnsummer.com/, and scholarships arefor any of their programs.

Each child may attend two weeks of camp and if awarded the scholarship will be in the amount of $200.00 each week toward the cost of the camp.This scholarship is available for Watertown residents only. We will begin to consider applications starting February 1, 2020 and accept them until June 1 or until all slots are filled, whatever occurs first.

Watertown Student Awarded Scholarship from Credit Union

Rachael Stokes, of Watertown, first place winner of the James A. Burley, Jr. Scholarship Awards. The following information was provided by RTN Federal Credit Union:

Rachael Stokes of Watertown has received the first place award of $5,000 from RTN Federal Credit Union as one of the 2020 recipients of RTN’s James A. Burley, Jr. Scholarship. Rachael will be attending Keene State College. The scholarship awards totaling $10,000 are presented annually to three students who are RTN members or dependents of members, and are enrolled in an undergraduate or post high school technical college. The award is named in honor of RTN’s late Chairman and Director, James A. Burley, Jr., who served the Credit Union for more than 30 years.
