Revels, Perkins School for the Blind Present 20th Annual Springtime Concert

The following information was provided by Revels:

“Ships are safest in harbor – but that is not what ships are built for.”

Since the whole world has been confined during the pandemic it’s time to invite you to join us for our 20th annual springtime collaboration with the talented Perkins School community – and this year, we are going to sea!

Revels and Perkins School for the Blind started collaborating on seasonal celebrations and springtime music programs over two decades ago when the Revels offices moved to Watertown. Over time, the event has blossomed into an annual tradition and is one of the most memorable and rewarding events of the year for us and the audiences we serve. Normally held in-person on the Perkins campus, this year’s production serves up old songs through new technology as our combined choruses – their voices freshly and safely recorded – present A Virtual Sea Revels Adventure, a maritime tale with sea songs, poetry and chanteys galore!

With Revels Artistic Director Paddy Swanson as our guide, song leader David Coffin as our chanteyman and Perkins students and Revels singers our bold crew, we will board ship, haul sails, man the pumps and face the perils and thrills of an ocean voyage in a sailing ship. You can sing with us or just come along for the ride; we just can’t wait to get out on the ocean!

This year’s performers include:

David Coffin, chanteyman

Patrick Swanson, Narrator

The Revels Singers

The Revels Children

and

The Perkins Secondary Program Chorus, Arnie Harris, director

Through this virtual production and the many live collaborations throughout the years, Revels and Perkins School for the Blind are delighted to demonstrate the power of traditional music, song and ritual to bridge cultures and eliminate boundaries.

Watch the Perkins School for the Blind Holiday Concert

Perkins School for the Blind

Students at Perkins School for the Blind kept the tradition of the annual Holiday Concert going in 2020. This year they performed it virtually. Perkins sent out the following message, and video of the concert:

We want to wish you and your loved ones a happy and healthy holiday season from the entire Perkins community. In that spirit, we’re excited to invite you to enjoy a video of this year’s virtual holiday concert! We had to do things a bit differently this year but music education at Perkins has continued and the students love it.

Perkins Library’s Recommended Reads for Changing Seasons

The Howe Building at Perkins School for the Blind. The following piece came from the Perkins School for the Blind Library:

The season of the year can play an integral part of the mood or plot of some fiction. This Recommended Reads list features novels in which the seasons of the year play a large role and provide important background for the story. People’s personalities and issues can be strongly affected by the season and its associated weather events. One example is the novel Snow by Orhan Pamuk (DB 58863).

Perkins Library Remains Closed, Find Out About Online Services

The following information was provided by the Perkins School for the Blind Library:

Dear Perkins Library Patrons,

As Coronavirus (COVID-19) concerns continue to evolve, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker has extended his March 23rd “Stay at Home” Executive Order requiring all non-essential businesses to close. At this time, the Executive Order will now extend until May 4, 2020. As we had previously communicated, the Perkins Library falls into this category, so no Library mail has been sent out since March 24. Additionally, we ask borrowers to hold all Library materials until you are notified that we are able to receive them by return mail. While we can’t ship physical materials, you can always download from our Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD) service.
