WHS Logo Images Narrowed to Four by Mascot Committee

The options for Watertown’s next mascot, or logo, to go with Watertown High School’s Raiders name were narrowed down to four Tuesday night and the decision will now be up to the School Committee. Before the final choice is made, the proposed logos will go to the public so they can give their input about which one they favor, said School Committee vice chairman Kendra Foley, who is chair of the Mascot Subcommittee. The committee was presented six possible concepts for the logo on Tuesday. The images looked different from the previous meeting in September when the group was unable to narrow the choices beyond six. After looking at the latest concepts, the group was uneasy with how they looked, saying that the liked some of the ones from the previous meeting better.

Committee Narrows Down Possible Mascots/Logos for Watertown High School

Knights, Colonists, American Indians, foxes, bobcats, and many more – these are some of the choices that the Watertown High School Mascot Screening Committee has to choose from for the school’s new logo.

The group of students, alumni, parents and school staff met Tuesday night to review the 17 submissions for the new WHS mascot/logo, and shortened the list for the graphic designer working with the group to have some ideas. The submissions came from students and others in town, said School Committee Vice Chair Kendra Foley, who is chairing the Mascot Screening Committee. One even came from a fifth grader. The group was asked what characteristics they wanted the mascot to have. One of the students on the committee, Abbie Peterson, said she wanted to show that Watertown is “a strong community, we don’t let anything hold us back and we strive to be the best.”

Watertown Schools Accepting Proposals for WHS’s New Mascot/Logo

The Watertown Public Schools are seeking a new mascot (i.e. logo) and the Mascot Screening Committee is looking for submissions to be considered. School officials sent out the following announcement:

The Watertown Public School district has begun a process to identify and select a mascot/logo for Watertown High School. The high school has a nickname – the Raiders – and school colors – red, white and black – but it does not have an official mascot/logo. The nickname and school colors provide a common identity and connection to the traditions of the school, teams, and community. A mascot/logo adds to this by presenting a graphic image of that identity and connections.

Committee Selected to Choose New Mascot to Go With Watertown Raiders Name

An 18-member committee has been appointed to find a new image to represent Watertown High School. The Committee is called the Mascot Screening Committee, but on Monday night School Committee Chairman John Portz said the Raiders name will not be changed, nor will the school’s red and black colors. The group has been given the task of finding a mascot, or logo, that represents the high school, its teams, clubs and other organizations. The current status of the mascot is confusing. While the image of the dancing cartoon American Indian can be seen around town, that is not the official mascot for the high school.

School Committee Decides on Future of WHS Mascot, Logo

After weeks of debate, controversy and discussion, the School Committee came to a conclusion on what to do with the Watertown High School mascot and logo: Nothing. Officially, the school’s mascot is the Raiders and the school has no official logo. The School Committee voted unanimously to let the situation remain the same. The Controversy
This spring, the high school held a contest where students could come up with a logo for the school, with a restriction that it could not portray an American Indian or any other stereotypical display of a race or ethnicity. Some students and community members did not like the idea of changing the long-used mascot, and felt like it had been rushed into.

School District Seeking Community Input on WHS Mascot & Logo

After hearing from many concerned Watertown residents and WHS alumni, school officials will be seeking input about the high school’s mascot and logo. The school decided to choose a new logo, and possibly a new nickname to replace the Red Raiders logo, which featured a cartoon-ized American Indian. The school continues to be called the Raiders, but for the past several years the school has not had a logo to put on uniforms, shirts and other items.

Students at the high school have been invited to enter a contest to design a new school logo (see more here). The finalists were supposed to be announced, and voted on this week. On Tuesday, however, Superintendent Jean Fitzgerald and WHS Principal Shirley Lundberg announced that the decision would take more time.
