Applications Being Accepted for 51st Lt. Paul J. Sullivan Scholarship

Lt. Paul Sullivan was killed in Vietnam in 1968, and a scholarship in his name has been given out for 50 years. Organizers of the Lt. Paul J. Sullivan Scholarship sent out the following announcement:

The Lieutenant Paul J. Sullivan Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce the 51st annual Lt. Paul J. Sullivan Scholarship. The Scholarship Award of $5,000 will be awarded to a deserving high school senior to perpetuate Paul’s memory. There will also be awards for the other finalists. Last year, a total of $23,000 was awarded to ten young men and women.

Playground to be Dedicated to Lt. Paul Sullivan, Who Died in Vietnam 50 Years Ago

Watertown will honor Lt. Paul J. Sullivan, who died in Vietnam 50 years ago this year. A plaque will be unveiled during the ceremony at the Sullivan Playground on June 24. The year after his death, the Town named the playground at the corner of Mt. Auburn Street and Arlington Street for Sullivan. This year, it will be rededicated and a new plaque has been installed with a portrait.

Legacy of Watertown Soldier Killed in Vietnam Lives 50 Years Later in Annual Scholarship

Fifty years after his death, Paul Sullivan continues to inspire the youth of Watertown and surrounding communities, and his legacy lives on in the recipients of the scholarship that bears his name. On June 23, 2018, a banquet will be held to honor the winners of the 50th Annual Lt. Paul J. Sullivan Scholarship and several other scholarships that have grown out of the effort to commemorate the 24-year-old from Watertown, who was killed in Vietnam on Aug. 9, 1968. The day after the banquet, a plaque will be unveiled at the playground named after Sullivan on the corner of Mt. Auburn Street and Arlington Street. Sullivan joined the U.S. Army in 1968 and trained to become a Ranger.

Cable Show Will Tell the Story of One of Watertown’s Fallen Veterans

For years, Bob Kaprielian has been interviewing Watertown’s veterans to find out about the stories of serving in the United States military, but his latest episode of A Veteran’s Story will be different because it focuses on one of the town’s fallen heroes. Kaprielian interviewed family members, friends and those who were impacted by Lt. Paul Sullivan, who died in action in Vietnam on Aug. 9, 1968. Sullivan went into the Army Rangers and he trained at Fort Benning, Georgia, before being shipped to Vietnam. He arrived during some of the fiercest fighting of the Vietnam War.
