WHS Sports: Girls Hockey Player Honored, Wrestling Winning and More

Watertown girls hockey player Aurora Fidler was named a player of the week by the Boston Globe for scoring two goals in the Raiders 3-2 win over Woburn. Watertown also got a stellar performance from goalie Jonna Kennedy, who made 52 saves. Wrestlers Collect Trio of Wins
Watertown’s wrestlers dominated a quad meet and beat all three opponents, according a story on Wicked Local Watertown. The Raiders defeated Northbridge (36­-18), Gloucester (48­-18), and Josiah Quincy Upper School (42­-18). Among the top performers were Alek Kebabjian (160 pounds), Nick Stanizzi (106), and Farid Mawanda (152) who all went 2-0 during the meet.

SPORTS UPDATE: WHS Basketball & Hockey, and Amateur Boxing

Watertown’s girls basketball team got back on track after suffering its first loss of the year. 

The Raiders went to Stoneham on Tuesday and won 57-27, with Katelyn Rourke and Nicole Lanzo scoring a combined 33 points. Friday night, Watertown came home and defeated Wilmington 58-37. The Raiders are now 7-1 and 6-0 in the Middlesex League. Boys Basketball
The Raiders had a mixed start to the New Year, which ended on a very positive note. The Raiders fell in a home game to Waltham 48-44 on Jan.

Big issues seemed to be everywhere you looked around Watertown in 2015, with new developments, the firefighter contract, the opioid epidemic and the Town Election, plus Watertown athletes enjoyed great success. Development
Rising above all the major issues this year was development. A number of major projects were proposed in town, many of which were approved. In January, the controversial East Watertown CVS got approved. In June, the major apartment complex on Arsenal Street, Elan Watertown, received approval – a project that went through the town’s new Design Standards and Guidelines.

WHS Sports: Boys Hockey Wins High Scoring Game, Herald All-Stars

The Watertown boys hockey team won a high scoring affair at the John A. Ryan Arena on Wednesday night. 

The Raiders took the non-league game 6-5 over visiting Westborough. The win improved Watertown’s record to 2-3 on the season. The Raiders’ next game is Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against Burlington at Ryan Arena. Herald All-Stars

Watertown Native, BC Hockey Coach Jerry York Approaching 1,000th Win

Sometime in January, Boston College hockey coach Jerry York will get his 1,000th win as a college hockey coach. 

The man who grew up in Watertown and still calls the town home was featured in a long piece in the Boston Herald this week. He already has the most wins of any college hockey coach, and Boston College remains one of the best teams in the country, currently ranked No. 4. While he spent years at Clarkson and Bowling Green, York is best known for his time at the Heights, where he also attended college and played hockey. What is the key to his success? The Herald’s Ron Borges writes that it is his ability to live in the present.

Globe Spotlights Watertown’s Lauren Kelly for Hockey Exploits at Northeastern

Watertown-native Lauren Kelly’s hockey abilities led her to be recruited by Div. I program Northeastern, where she has become a big part of the Huskies defense. Kelly attended the Winchendon School, where she played ice hockey, soccer and softball. Now a sophomore, Kelly has become a playmaker for the Huskies, with 10 assists in 18 games for an improving Northeastern women’s hockey team. The Boston Globe interviewed Kelly, who said she benefited as a young player by competing with her sister Erika, who was better known as a Watertown field hockey star.

WHS Sports: Basketball Teams Claim Victories, Hockey Teams Fall

The Watertown basketball teams both claimed home victories Wednesday night in a day full of action for the Raiders. The boys basketball team grabbed its first win of the year. Watertown beat visiting Burlington 57-43 and improved to 1-3. The Raiders will return to the WHS Gym on Jan. 2 to take on Waltham at 7 p.m.
Senior forward Felicia Korte scored 11 points to help the Raiders girls basketball team beat Burlington 43-27.

WHS Girls Basketball Highly Ranked, Boys Hockey Skates to First Win

The Watertown High School girls basketball team lost only once last year, and the Raiders may have even more expectations according to the polls. The Boston Herald ranked Watertown third in Eastern Massachusetts Pre-Season Poll, ESPN Boston ranks the Raiders third in their MIAA Girls Basketball Poll and the Boston Globe has Watertown fifth in its Top 20. Among MIAA Div. 2 North squads, the Raiders are at the top, according to the Herald. Other squads in the North to contend with are Arlington Catholic and Belmont, the team the Raiders beat in the Section Semifinal last year, according to the Heralds’ Girls Div.
