WHS Sports: Field Hockey on the Brink of History, Football Falls

The Watertown field hockey team is on the verge of history. With two wins this week, the Raiders need one more win to tie the all-time national high school unbeaten streak of 153. Monday they play at Wilmington for the tie, then – if victorious – the Raiders return to Victory Field on Wednesday at 3:45 p.m. to take on Melrose to seek to set the new record. This week, Watertown had a pair of shutouts. On Monday, they traveled to Burlington and came home with a 6-0 win.

WHS Sports: Field Hockey Beats Belmont, Boys’ Soccer Scores Big Upset

Archrival Belmont put up a struggle for the Watertown High School field hockey team, but they could not stop the Raiders from recording their 150th straight unbeaten game. 

The game Thursday was played in Belmont and the Marauders kept Watertown off the board for 23 minutes until senior Michaela Antonellis scored off a pass from Maddie Leitner, according to the report from The Belmontonian. Senior Ally McCall made it 2-0 on a counter attack with 26 minutes left in the second. Then, Leitner got a goal of her own off a corner with 21 minutes left. Antonellis scored her second with 12 minutes left in the game and secured Watertown’s 12th win of the season. Belmont forced Raider goalie Jonna Kennedy to stop two shots.

WHS Sports: Field Hockey Keeps Rolling, Football Team Drops First Game

Watertown’s field hockey team collected a trio of wins this week, all shut outs, and built on the long unbeaten streak. On Monday, the Raiders traveled to Melrose and came back with a 5-0 victory. Five different players scored for Watertown in the contest, according to the Wicked Local Watertown story. The Raiders defeated Wakefield 5-0 in a road game on Wednesday. Sophomore Lauren Petrillo scored the first two goals of the game – her first as a varsity player, according to Wicked Local Watertown.

Undefeated 1994 Watertown Field Hockey Team Going into Hall of Fame

As with anything meaningful in life, winning the program’s sixth State title in eight years wasn’t easy for the undefeated 1994 Watertown High Field hockey team, but it sure was satisfying. The team will be inducted into the Watertown High School Athletic Hall of Fame on Oct. 17, find out how to get tickets below. After losing in the state semi-finals the year before, the 9 seniors on the team were determined from day 1 to raise another banner before graduating, according to the article submitted by the WHS HOF. As a team they all bought into Coach Donahue’s mantra of “one practice at a time, and one game at a time.”

The talented roster consisted of two key returning stars in All-Scholastic captains Bethany Rogers and Kerry Lessard, and the net-minding chores were handled by returning junior Lori Piscatelli.

WHS Sports: QB Leads Football Team to Win, Field Hockey Keeps Winning

Watertown quarterback Deon Smith used his legs to lead the Raiders to a win over Wakefield in the Middlesex League opener, Friday night. The junior ran for 183 yards, including a 93-yard touchdown run in the third quarter at Wakefield. That came after a 32-yard scamper for a TD in the first quarter, according to the Boston Globe box score. Conner Kennelly accounted for the rest of the scoring with two field goals and two extra points. The Raiders held off a fourth quarter rally, beating Wakefield 20-14.

For the first time in its distinguished history, the Watertown High School Athletic Hall of Fame is proud to induct four athletes from the same family at the same time, according to a story submitted by the WHS HOF. Hall of Fame Field Hockey coach Eileen Donahue describes sisters Bethany ’95, Jane, ’98, Catherine, ’00, and Mary Rogers, ’03 as “humble, yet fiercely competitive champions on and off the field.” As athletes and coaches they have combined to contribute 10 State Championships. In the long line of field hockey greatness in this town, these sisters are among the best to ever wear the Red Raider uniform.

WHS Sports: Watertown Football Heads Out of State, Field Hockey Keeps Winning

Watertown High School hit the road in a big way for the second football game of the season, and had a successful trip to Rhode Island. The Raiders defeated host Mt. Pleasant 31-0 on Saturday, with running back Zach Rimsa scoring two first quarter touchdowns, according to the Boston Globe boxscore. Watertown scores all its points in the first half, with Robert Kennedy and Luis Moradel each running for second quarter touchdowns. Kicker Santino Fieremonte hit a 33-yard field goal in the first quarter and made all four extra points.

Watertown Field Hockey Nets Win After Close First Half

The Raiders got a bit of a scare from Winchester Friday afternoon when they kept the field hockey team scoreless in the first half of the home opener, but Watertown pulled away in the second half. 

After putting constant pressure on the Winchester goal Watertown’s Kourtney Kennedy got one past Paige Ross about seven minutes into the second half. Kennedy struck on a penalty stroke after she was pulled down in front of the net. Michaela Antonellis made it 3-0 Raiders and Aurora Fidler tapped one in the final goal for Watertown in the 4-0 win. The Raiders kept a variety of streaks alive, including 140 straight unbeaten, 80 straight wins and 27 straight shutouts.
