Watertown’s Kennedy Named National Field Hockey Athlete of the Year

Kourtney Kennedy had already enjoyed a successful senior season, winning a state championship and collecting many accolades, and now she has received an honor never given to any field hockey player from Watertown, or even Massachusetts – National Athlete of the Year. Kennedy received the National High School Senior Field Hockey Athlete of the Year honor, the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) announced this week. “Kourtney is an excellent example what this award stands for,” said Eric Hess, Executive Director of the NHSCA said in the award announcement. “Kourtney has excelled on the field and off.  She is a leader that led her school to national records for victories. We congratulate Kourtney on an outstanding high school career.”

She is the first winner from Massachusetts in the 18-year history of the NHSCA Field Hockey Athlete of the Year Award.

Watertown Field Hockey Player Named as High School All-American

For the second straight year, Watertown’s Kourtney Kennedy has been selected as a Second Team All-American Field Hockey player. Kennedy closed out her senior year at Watertown High School by winning the state title for the fourth time (and the school’s eighth straight). She scored the winning goal in the state final in November and next year she will play Div. 1 college field hockey. Though she had success on the field, Kennedy said she did not think she would be chosen as one of best in the nation.

Jonna Kennedy’s play with the Watertown High School field hockey team has drawn national interest, and the junior goalie recently learned she was named to the United States’ Under 17 National Squad. The year was already a successful one for Kennedy, who helped guide the Raiders to their eighth straight state title as one of the team’s co-captains. She was on the way home from the team’s tryouts in Pennsylvania when she got the news. “I was first very excited to be invited to try out for the team but more excited when I heard that I made the U17 National Squad,” Kennedy said. “I’m just vey fortunate to have been coached well at WHS and on my club team, Boston Field Hockey Club.”

Watertown Wins Thriller to Capture Eighth Straight Field Hockey State Title

WORCESTER – The Raiders found themselves in an unfamiliar spot with just under 11 minutes left in Saturday’s state final – tied and with momentum on the side of their opponents – but Watertown’s senior co-captain Kourtney Kennedy made the game changing play and the team lifted the Div. 2 Field Hockey State Championship trophy for the eighth straight time.

Watertown High School’s field hockey team seemed to have a solid lead, up 3-1 early in the second half of the state final at WPI, but a feisty Oakmont team battled back with two goals making it anyone’s game. Along with an aggressive attack, the Spartans’ defense focused on Kennedy, and kept her largely hemmed for the majority of the game. Six minutes after the score was tied, Kennedy found space in the middle of the circle and blasted home the winning goal late in the 4-3 win. “Initially I thought, just get the ball in the circle, and then I saw I could get past another girl and then I knew I could get that shot off,” Kennedy said.
