City Manager Hosting Meet & Greet for West Side Residents

The following information was provided by Councilor Emily Izzo:

City Manager George Proakis will be having a Meet & Greet for residents of District D. This will be taking place on Thursday, Nov. 3 from 6-8 p.m. in the Watertown Police Station Community Room.  

This will be a great opportunity to meet our new Manager and introduce yourself, as well as discuss any questions or concerns for the West End of Watertown! Hope to see you there!

New Councilor Sworn In, Will Serve the Remainder of the Term Representing District D Before Serving Full Term

Charlie BreitroseEmily Izzo was sworn in as District D Councilor on Thursday night. She will fill the remainder of the term for the vacant seat representing the westside of Watertown before starting her first full term. Westsiders have a Councilor again with newly elected District D Councilor Emily Izzo’s swearing in on Thursday evening. Unlike the other new City Councilors, Izzo will start serving before the start of the new term in January because she is filling a vacant seat. Her predecessor, Ken Woodland, stepped down from the Council in April to take a position with the state that prohibits him from serving on the council.

LETTER: District D Resident Endorses Candidate for Town Council

Dear Watertown Community and District D Residents,

I am a proud member of District D in Watertown and strongly support Connie Henry for District D Town Councilor. Connie has been an educator in the Boston Public Schools, recently retiring after serving as Assistant Director of K-12 Mathematics. Even though she is retired, Connie now continues to support students in her work at Boston University. She has been a passionate resident and advocate for District D in Watertown for 45 years and raised her children andgrandchildren in this Town. Connie’s long-term passion for climate issues includes early work on the dismantling of the former nuclear reactor in Watertown, and now supporting a sustainable climate action plan and securing green space for all residents.

The Town of Watertown has four districts, each of which is represented by a Town Councilor. In the 2021 Watertown Election three of four districts have contested races. Represents the East End of town, District A includes the area of town east of School Street, including Coolidge Square, as well as some streets west of School Street that are between Walnut Street and Mt. Auburn Street.

LETTER: Former Westside Councilor Endorses Candidate Running for His Old Seat

I write today to enthusiastically endorse Emily Izzo to be the next District D Town Councilor! Emily is a lifelong resident who attended Watertown public schools. I have known her for decades and cannot think of someone better suited to be a Town Councilor and represent the west end. Not only is Emily uniquely qualified to serve (she is a municipal finance law attorney), her motivation to serve is as humble as it is pragmatic. She grew up here, loves this Town and wants to use her talents in this very field to continue making it the great place it is today.

Are you a District D resident? Join your neighbors for an outdoor listening session on Sunday, September 12 from 3-4:30pm hosted by the Committee to Elect Connie Henry. The event will use a “World Cafe” model that encourages conversation among neighbors. There will be four stations focused on the following important topics: Development and Traffic; Green Spaces and the Environment; Education and Public Safety; and Communication, Equity, and Inclusion.

Emily Izzo announced her candidacy for the District D Town Council seat. It is with great enthusiasm that I announce my candidacy for District D Town Councilor. My name is Emily Izzo and I am a lifelong Watertown resident who grew up in the west end and attended Cunniff Elementary School, Watertown Middle School and Watertown High School, graduating in 2008. After graduating from Assumption College, where I majored in Political Science and History and minored in Sociology, I began my career in public service working for State Representative John Lawn. First as a legislative aide and later as Chief of Staff, my work with residents and elected officials to enact good government policies reaffirmed in me what public service is all about.

Council Seeks Applicants to Fill Westside District Seat, Must Agree Not to Run in Fall

The Town Council decided to appoint someone to fill the vacancy in the District D seat, which represents the westside of Watertown. Applicants must agree not to run for the seat in the November Town Election. The seat became vacant when Ken Woodland stepped down after taking a job that does not allow him to serve on the Town Council in April. The Council debated whether or not to even fill the seat, and other details, such as whether the person would be able to run for re-election in the fall. Councilor John Gannon asked how the Town could enforce the rule that the person could not run for the seat in the Town Election.
