Firm That Created Watertown’s Design’s Guidelines Wins Top Award

Gamble Associates received a top award from the Boston Society of Architects for its work on the Watertown Design Guidelines and Standards at the recent BSA Awards Gala. The Cambridge-based firm is headed by David Gamble, a Watertown resident. The Design Guidelines and Standards set out a vision for development in Watertown’s main squares and the major roads in town. Gamble Associates received the Honor Award in the Campus and Urban Planning category, which is the highest honor. It was the only project to get the Honor Award for Urban Planning.

Design Firm Wins Architectural Award for Watertown Design Guidelines

The firm that put together the Watertown Design Guidelines was honored for its work by being named a finalist for an award from the Boston Society of Architects. This month, the BSA announced the Watertown Design Guidelines has been chosen as one of the finalists for the Campus and Urban Planning Awards category. The awards will be announced at the BSA’s Design Awards Gala on Jan. 28. David Gamble, principal of Gamble Associates, put together the design guidelines after holding a series of community forums, as well as working with town officials and the developer of a major project on Arsenal Street.

Design Standards and Guidelines Get Final Approval With Some Dissent

After more than nine months of work, Watertown’s new Design Standards and Guidelines have been approved, but not without some concerns. Before Watertown began working on the design guidelines and standards, developers only really knew what they could not build on a piece of land, said Assistant Town Manager and Community Development and Planning Director Steve Magoon. The standards and guidelines were one of the recommendations of the town’s Comprehensive Plan, passed last week. They were also the result of a push for something to deal with the development boom in town. The new standards and guidelines will give developers an idea of what the town would like the project to look like, said David Gamble, the town’s consultant in drawing up the standards and guidelines.

Town Council Meeting to Consider Watertown Design Standards, Guidelines

About nine months of work, meetings and debate, Watertown’s new standards for developments in town will be considered for final approval by the Town Council. The Council scheduled a public hearing on June 30 at 6:30 p.m. in Town Hall on the proposed changes to the Zoning Ordinance that have been proposed as part of the design standards. The Council will also consider adopting a separate set of design guidelines. Guidelines help spell out how the town wants developments to be built and the standards are the language of the guidelines folded into the town’s zoning bylaws, said David Gamble, the consultant hired by the town to help create the new set of rules. The Council voted to create the standards and guidelines to help the town handle the influx of new development in town, particularly along Arsenal Street.

2 Documents that Will Shape Watertown’s Future Will be Discussed Soon

Two documents that will have a major impact on Watertown’s future will be discussed in public meetings. 

The Planning Board will hold a public hearing to continue discussion of the Design Guidelines & Standards. This document includes proposed changes to the Watertown Zoning Ordinance and will add new rules for major residential and commercial developments in town (find out more here). The meeting will be held on Thursday, April 30 at 7 p.m. in the Town Council Chamber. The Town Council and the Planning Board will get together for a public hearing on the Comprehensive Plan. This document sets out a vision for the town’s future in several categories, including land use, transportation, housing, economic development, open space, natural resources, historical and cultural resources, public services, and energy.

Town’s Design Guidelines and Standards Revealed by Consultant

A draft of the set of requirements that guide and limit developers who build new projects in Watertown was revealed by the urban design consultants hired by the town. Last week, David Gamble of Gamble Associates discussed the proposed design guidelines and design standards that will shape how development will be done in Watertown in the future. They were presented at the third public workshop held in the past four months held during the making of the guidelines and standards. The Town Council voted to hire the consultant to address what they and many residents believed had become out of control development in Watertown. The changes were broken into nine categories: public realm interface, building massing, facade treatment, parking & access, building height, material selection, sustainable design, building setbacks and signage.

Consultant Will Help Draft Changes to Watertown’s Zoning

The Town Council agreed to hire a consultant to figure out how Watertown’s zoning should change to encourage development in town while preserving its neighborhoods. A set of design standards and design guidelines will be drafted with the help of the consultant. The Council decided to go this route, rather than having a building moratorium on the Arsenal Street Corridor, as a group had petitioned to do. Putting together the design standards and guidelines will take 3 to 4 months, said Community Development and Planning Director Steve Magoon. The design standards lay out the rules that developers and property owners must follow when building in town, Magoon said, and design guidelines provide examples of how the standards would be applied.
