See Which Watertown Athletes Made the Globe’s All-Stars

Watertown had a successful fall season, and four athletes were honored for their play by the Boston Globe. Boy’s soccer player Rafael DeSouza earned the Div. 3 player of the year from the Boston Globe. In his senior year, DeSouza scored 11 goals and added 12 assists, grabbed the Middlesex MVP award and was named All-New England by the EMSCA. He scored 36 goals and had 26 assists in his career and is a two-time EMass All-Star, according to the Globe.

Watertown Resident Featured in Globe Story on Adventure Racing

Watertown’s Rick Keilty recently spent four days venturing through 250 miles of woods in Maine by foot, bicycle and boat. The adventure racer was featured in a story in the Boston Globe. He and his teammate Eric Wyler of Brighton took part in the Untamed New England race near Moosehead Lake. Teams from around the world came out to take on the event, which showcases land preserved by the Boston-based Appalachian Mountain Club’s Maine Woods Initiative. Keilty and Wyler took 30th in the competition.

You May be Seeing More of Eliza Dushku Around Watertown

Watertown’s very own Hollywood star will be moving back to the area, so look for Eliza Dushku around her hometown! Dushku told the Boston Globe that she is heading back to Watertown after breaking up with her longtime beau and former NBA player Rick Fox. (See the Globe story here)

She has purchased a condo in the area and may be going back to school, Dushku told the Globe. Know for her roles in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Dollhouse,” Dushku is filming a movie at a former psychiatric hospital in Michigan this summer (find out more here). She graduated from Watertown High School and has family in the area still, including her mother, a former Suffolk University professor, and brother Aaron, who is on the Watertown Town Council.

Watertown Company Suffers Data Breach

Watertown-based Tufts Health Plan reported a data breach that compromised some of its customers’ personal information. Details including Social Security numbers, names and birth dates for nearly 9,000 customers was stolen, according to a report in the Boston Globe. The information taken did not include medical or financial information. Watertown Safari Company Embroiled in Controversy

Watertown-based Thomson Safaris has been accused of illegally taking land in Tanzania and mistreating locals, but the company maintains the accusations are all fictional. Thomson Safaris faces charges in Tanzanian courts that the company is accused of  driving the Maasai people off their land in order to buy it, according to a report in the Boston Globe. The more than 12,000 acres is used to take visitors on safari. While the company was ordered by the U.S. Federal Court to turn over information on the land acquisition, the owners – Rick Thomson and Judi Wineland of Watertown – said the charges are false and were brought by another group in Tanzania that wanted to buy the land. Watertown Company Helps Keep the Lights On

The electricity keeps running smoothly through your power lines, and more than 90 percent of power lines in the United States, thanks to the help of Watertown’s Doble Engineering. The Boston Globe featured the company, located on Walnut Street, in Thursday’s edition. The company was founded nearly a century ago and now provides technology, analysis and expertise to power providers, including NStar and National Grid, according to the Globe article.
