Watertown Girls Basketball Team Dominates Second Half to Win Tourney Game

The State Tournament got started on a positive note for the Watertown High School girls basketball team with a 53-28 win over Greater Lowell Tech on Friday night. The 26th-seeded Gryphons kept the game close in the first half, trailing by four after the first quarter. But seventh-seeded Watertown got a trio of three pointers from senior Ellie Monahan — two before halftime and one after — to help the Raiders pull away for the win in the first round of the MIAA Div. 3 State Tournament.

Taylor Lambo Joins Watertown Girls Basketball’s Elite 1,000 Point Club

A 33 point performance in just three quarters on Saturday vaulted Watertown High School senior Taylor Lambo over the 1000-point mark in the Raiders’ victory over Weston. Lambo knew she was approaching the four-figure mark before the game in the WHS Gym, but she wasn’t given word by Watertown Girls Basketball Coach Pat Ferdinand until just before she reached 1,000. “I had talked to him about it, I wasn’t super close to it, so it wasn’t definite that I was going to hit it,” Lambo said. “He didn’t even tell me until like two points before, and he was like, ‘Your next layup is 1,000.’

Herald Picks Members of Watertown’s Boys, Girls Basketball Teams as Players to Watch

Four Watertown basketball players made the Boston Herald’s preseason Players to Watch lists, two from the boys team and a couple members of the girls team. A pair of sister made the list for the Div. 3 girls basketball 2021-22 season: senior Taylor and sophomore Lily Lambo.

Basketball Camps for Young Players to be Hosted by Watertown High Coaches

Watertown High School’s basketball coaches will be running a camp for young players in August. Watertown boys basketball coach Steve Harrington (Harry) and girls basketball coach Pat Ferdinand (Coach Pat), will put on summer skills sessions for players boys and girls going into grades 3 through 9. Camps are separated into age groups. This year, the camps will be held at the Browne Basketball Courts, behind the Watertown Police Station, 552 Main St. The four-day camps run for an hour-and-a-half each day.

Watertown Boys Basketball Player Named All-Scholastic, Girls Player Makes Honorable Mention List

Watertown senior Gabe Spinelli scored 39 points in the Raiders’ win over Lexington in the Middlesex League Tournament. Watertown senior basketball player Gabe Spinelli made the Boston Globe’s All-Scholastic team, and junior Taylor Lambo made the paper’s honorable mention All-Scholastic list. Spinelli returned to Watertown after a year at Beaver Country Day and helped the Raiders go 13-1. As point guard, he helped the Raiders win the Middlesex League Freedom Division regular season and then emerge as champions of the first ever Middlesex League Tournament. The MIAA did not run state tournaments, so the league held its own knock-out competition.

Local Company Sponsoring Watertown Kids So They Can Compete in 3-on-3 Basketball League

Beast Basketball Training will sponsor five players to participate in the Watertown 3-on-3 league which will be taking place at Fillipello Park. They will also sponsor five players in the league taking place in Winchester. Beast Basketball Training decided to sponsor the kids after being inspired by Peter Tzannos of Realty Executives who also sponsored 10 players, according to Raffi Boyadjian. One of the Best WHS Basketball Players Looking to Play at College’s Highest Level

Gabe Spinelli returned to Watertown for his senior year. Coach Steve Harrington called him one of the best players he has coached. The pandemic has altered plans for many. While most of those changes fall in the negative column, there was a positive one for the Watertown High School boys basketball team, as it led to the return of a star player who’s looking to take his game to the Division I college level. Gabe Spinelli spent his first two years playing for the Raiders, and got some quality playing time on Watertown’s 2018 State Championship team his freshman year.
