Art Gallery at Watertown Apartment Complex Seeks Work from Local Artists, Part of Sales Proceeds Go to Charity

Elan Union MarketThe Art Saint Hope Gallery in the Elan Union Market apartments will display work of local artists and part of the sales will go to help charity. Artists have a new place to display their work in Watertown, and the gallery also helps raise money for charity. Shamere Ross, the lead technician at Elan Union Market apartments, had a vision to beautify the large community space in the complex on the corner of Arsenal and Irving streets. The space has 20-foot high windows and Ross wanted to do something that both livened the space and gave artists a place to have their work seen. “Artists go through a lot trying to get art on display.

The late fall season at Kingston Gallery features inventive and provocative new work by Chantal Zakari (a Watertown resident) and Margaret Hart. The exhibitions provide a visual metaphor, either of the overlap of the past history of a particular place or of an imagined merging of nature and technology in a posthuman future.

ARTrelief Offering Free Virtual Classes During COVID-19 Outbreak

East Watertown-based ARTrelief is offering free groups through the month of May. The groups are meeting virtually during the COVID-19 shutdown, and there are courses for kids and adults, said Clinical Director Cecile Reve. ARTrelief is an innovative Expressive Arts Therapy center which has serviced individuals across the lifespan, according to its website. 

The group dedicates itself to the use and promotion of all forms of art to support health, joy, awareness, development, education, social-economic adjustment, cultural inclusion, equality, dignity and integrity in the community. ARTrelief provides free virtual art and play workshops and therapy, and wants to invite the community to benefit. See the list of classes available below:

The following groups are free through the month of May, after that virtual fee is a monthly unlimited pass ($50), or a drop-in rate of $10 per person.

Watertown Public Schools is collaborating with PTO’s and C-STEAM Futures to host a FREE, Innovative, 3 day, Parent-Child February vacation camp for students in grades 3-5. The WPS Family STEAM+CS (Science Technology, Engineering, Art and Math + Computer Science) program is designed to engage children in the interdisciplinary world of STEAM & Computer Science and aim at engaging them in hands-on creative problem solving and computational thinking. Activities include:

3 Murals Inspired by Watertown Going up at Arsenal Yards, Stores Opening Soon

Three murals will be created at Arsenal Yards by, from left to right, artist Louise ‘Ouizi’ Jones, painter Kim Carlino, and artist Felipe Ortiz. The first stores at Arsenal Yards, the project renovating the former mall, will be opening in coming weeks, and the mixed-use project will also feature murals inspired by Watertown created by three artists, according to owners of the mall. Arsenal Yards is installing three large-scale murals at various locations around the property, coinciding with the Fall 2019 debut of its first round of restaurants and retailers. Inspired in part by the lush natural beauty of Arsenal Park, the Charles River, and the history of its distinctive East End Watertown location, the mural artworks are currently being created by locally and nationally recognized artists commissioned by Arsenal Yards. Creating a vibrant and eclectic environment, one that includes one-of-a-kind public artworks, is part of the plan to make Arsenal Yards a new and unique urban village.
