The Residence Inn by Marriott will host a blood drive on Thursday, Aug. 31. The event will be held on the seventh anniversary of the opening of the hotel. The Watertown Community Blood Drive will be hosted by the hotel in the East End Watertown Room, 570 Arsenal St., Watertown. The American Red Cross will be at the hotel on Aug.
The VA Boston Healthcare System will close clinics in the area to help prevent the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19), but will continue to provide services. Also, the Red Cross announced a shortage of blood. Access to the VA clinics in Boston, Framingham, Quincy and Plymouth will closed, but VA officials said they will provide outpatient care using virtual technology, such as telehealth, according to an NBC 10 Boston story. The American Red Cross will join community leaders to host three blood drives on April 15 in honor of the lives changed by the Boston Marathon bombings and to pay tribute to the strength and resilience shown by so many following the attacks. The drives will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 15 at Watertown High School, 50 Columbia St., Watertown; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sheraton Boston Hotel, 39 Dalton St., Boston; and 2-7 p.m. at First Congregational Church of Stoneham, 1 Church St., Stoneham. In April 2013, the Red Cross sent 600 blood products to Boston area hospitals in response to the Boston Marathon bombings. Volunteers are the only source of blood and platelets for hospital patients in need of transfusions. During National Volunteer Month, the Red Cross encourages eligible blood and platelet donors of all types to donate to help ensure blood products are available to hospital patients in need, as they were to many patients in the aftermath of the attacks in Boston.
Donating life-saving blood recently turned into an experience of a lifetime for Watertown resident Rachel Jacobs! She was named Blood Donor of the Game and was honored with tickets the Boston Red Sox Opening Day game against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday, April 11. Rachel entered to win the chance to become Blood Donor of the Game after recently donating blood with the American Red Cross. Together with the Boston Red Sox and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the Red Cross is proud to honor lucky presenting donors through the Blood Donor of the Game program. Fans are invited to enter to win after stepping up to the plate and volunteering to help patients in need.
The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive in Watertown on April 16 to pat tribute to the many who showed resilience following the Boston Marathon bombings. The blood drive will be held on Saturday, April 16 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at Watertown High School, 50 Columbia St. The Red Cross sent 600 blood products to Boston area hospitals after rhe Boston Marathon bombings, according to a press release, and MTBA Officer Dic Donohue (now a sergeant) needed 46 blood products to save his life after being shot during the shootout with Boston Marathon bombing suspects. Donors will received a free pass to Six Flags New England, which the Red Cross notes cannot be transferred or redeemed for cash.
