Watertown Summer Basketball League Semis Heading to Decisive Game 3

The following information was provided by the Watertown Recreation Department:

The 2025 Papas Elite Semifinals is all tied up at 1-1 with wins from the second-seeded Beavers and fourth-seeded Donohue’s Kaos Club. The Beavers evened up the series with an 80-54 victory of the third-seeded Zards in the first game on Monday night. Thomas Ferdinando dropped 17 points on the Zards, while Sam Longwell led the Zards with 18 points. In the second semifinal game of the night, Donohue’s Kaos Club pulled out the 68-60 overtime win over the top seed New Day.

The following announcement was provided by the Recreation Department:

Top seeded New Day and third seeded Zards take a 1-0 series advantage in a best-of-three 2025 Papas Elite semifinals.  

Led by Jamari Robinson’s 17-point night, New Day edged out fourth seed Donohue’s Kaos Club by a score of 51-46. Akeem Williams followed up Robinson netting 11 points. Bo Brace led Donohue’s with a total of 12 points.

The first round of the 2025 Papas Elite League Playoffs is in the books and No. 4 Donohue’s Kaos Club and No. 3 Zards are moving on to the best of three semifinals, beginning Thursday night August 7. The top seed New Day will face No. 4 Donohue’s Kaos Club at 8:20 p.m. Donohue’s Kaos Club defeated the fifth-seeded Middlesex Magic, 81-52, behind an 18-point night from Bo Brace and a 16-point night from Miles Wright.

Watertown Summer Basketball League Playoffs Start Wednesday, Cookout Thursday

Check out high quality basketball outside under the lights at Saltonstall Park when the Watertown Summer Basketball League playoffs begin this week. The teams are made up of current and former college players, and Thursday night there will be a cookout. The following information was provided by the Watertown Recreation Department:

The regular season has come to a close and the playoffs will open on Wednesday with a single elimination first round. New Day has claimed the top seed with an 11-4 record and earned a first-round bye along.

Watertown Hosts Mid-Summer Basketball Interleague Classic

For the first time, three premier summer basketball leagues met on the Saltonstall Court on Wednesday, July 2. Watertown Recreation hosted the Portsmouth (N.H.) Serious Summer League and the Honan League, of Allston-Brighton for a pair of friendly interleague contests.  

The first game of the night was also a first, featuring a competitive women’s game between the Honan League and the Portsmouth Women, before the defending champion Watertown Men’s League New Day hosted the Portsmouth Men. Harvard Head Coach Carrie Moore took time out of her busy schedule to visit Saltonstall Park for a few hours along with Harvard men’s Assistant Coach Matt Fraschilla. Community involvement and outreach is paramount for both Crimson basketball teams.

We thank both Carrie and Matt along with Portsmouth’s Harry Rafferty and Honan League’s Shawna Kelly for coming down for a historic night. Also a huge shout out to our scorekeepers Morgan Macomber, Emilio Berndt and Andrew MacDonald as well as Steve Shorter, Dave Engelson and Michal Ksiadz for outstanding officiating.

Watertown High Jumper Leapt to Top Level for Final Year of Her Collegiate Career

Watertown’s Abbi Peterson began high jumping in middle school, and her career competing in the event took her through Watertown High School and then to the NCAA Div. III level, where she competed against at nationals. This spring, she completed a bonus year, which she spent jumping at the top college level for Boston College. Peterson excelled while at Watertown High School, placing fifth at the Indoor New Englands in 2019 as a senior, and she made it to the New Balance Outdoor Nationals that spring where she jumped 5-foot-3-inches.

Boston Renegades Beep Baseball Team is Like a Family, Calls Watertown Home

Watertown has become the home training spot for the Boston Renegades, a beep baseball team. The sport allows players with vision impairments to continue to play and be part of a team. The team marks its 25th anniversary in 2025, and for most of that time Watertown has been its home. Each Sunday, the Renegades take the field at Filippello Park to prepare for upcoming tournaments, including the NBBA Beep Baseball World Series.

Watertown Swimmers Head to Florida to Compete at Boys & Girls Club Nationals

Members of the Watertown Boys & Girls Club Wavemakers swim team recently dove into fierce competition at the Boys & Girls Club National Swim Meet in St. Petersburg, Florida, from April 11-13, showcasing their talent among the nation’s best young athletes. Watertown Boys & Girls Club has been representing the community annually at the Nationals swim meet since 2012. This year, a group of 17 determined swimmers ages 10-17 made the trip under the leadership of Wavemakers Head Coach Erin Hickey and assistant coaches Jenn Lawlor and Dylan Hickey.
