Watertown-native Alexander Richards will be competing for the U.S. at the World Rowing Championships in August. A Watertown resident has been named to represent the United States at the 2019 World Rowing World Championships. Watertown’ s Alexander Richards will be part of the men’s eight boat going to the rowing competition being held Aug. 25-Sept. 1 in Linz, Austria, according to an announcement from USRowing.
A Watertown woman took home the title at the 38th annul Clam Festival Classic 5-mile road race in Yarmouth, Maine. Darby Middlebrook, 23, of Watertown won the women’s race in a time of 31 minutes 14 seconds, according to the Portland Press Herald. She beat the second place female finisher by 11 seconds. Watertown senior Mange Camara made the Boston Globe’s boy’s outdoor track All-Scholastic team. Camara, who will be running for Northeastern University next year, made the All-Scholastic team after winning the 400 meters at the All-State Meet, at the Div.

The renovation of the track and courts area at Victory Field took a major step forward Tuesday night when the Town Council approved funds to start the final designs. The Council unanimously approved spending $284,500 to allow the Victory Field Phase II project to proceed. The first phase was the renovation of the football and baseball areas at the sports complex on Orchard Street. The plan includes installing a new natural grass field in the center of the oval, and a new rubber track and subsurface, said Glenn Howard, project architect from CDM Smith.
Boston College hockey coach Jerry York. Boston College hockey coach Jerry York of Watertown got the call of a lifetime on Tuesday when he learned he will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. York, who grew up and still resides in Watertown, said he almost did not answer the call from New York Rangers President John Davidson telling him the news, according to a TSN Canada report. “I thought John Davidson was trying to trade for one of my players,” York told TSN. “When he told me I was going to be inducted, I had to sit down.”

Watertown’s Mange Camara closed out his high school track career by showing he can compete with the best high school runners in the nation. Camara, a senior, was joined by several other athletes at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, N.C., this weekend.
The Watertown High School boys and girls lacrosse teams both made the State Tournament this year, and each had to travel to Weston for their first round games. The boys got the 11th seed in the Div. 3 Central/East Section tourney and played No. 6 seed Weston on Monday Night. The Raiders fell 14-6 in the first round game, and finished the season with a record of 8-9.
