Public Invited to Ribbon Cutting & Tour of Temporary High School at Moxley Field

The public can get an inside look at the place where Watertown High School students will call home for the next three years. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at the Watertown High School at Pvt. First Class Moxley Field on Thursday, Aug. 31 at 4:30 p.m.

“The public is welcome and invited to see what beautiful work has been done there for our temporary high school,” City Council President Mark Sideris said.

The final touches are being made on the temporary campus in preparation for Watertown High School students to return to class on Sept. 5, and the students and staff alike will have to adapt to their new digs, which include sites outside the modular campus at Moxley Field. Principal Joel Giacobozzi told the WHS community that they will have to adjust to a new way of “doing school,” in the introduction in the student handbook (see below). Meanwhile, construction crews continue to work to get the two-story school made from prefabricated modules ready for class.

MassBay Offers Free Workforce Training Courses this Fall

The following information was provided by MassBay Community College:

This fall, MassBay Community College is offering free workforce training courses for eligible Massachusetts residents in Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Behavioral Health Technician, Microsoft Training, Medical Interpreting, and ASE Diesel Test Preparation. These courses are one-semester and paid for through the Massachusetts Education & Training Fund (ETF) initiative and provide students with in-demand skills that will strengthen gaps in workforce needs. “We are thrilled to offer students these classes, free of charge, to gain skills that will make them employable in industries that are growing and need trained professionals,” said MassBay Director of Corporate Partnerships and Workforce Development Phara Boyer. “In just a few short months, students can retool themselves into in-demand fields, and many of our students are offered jobs at the conclusion of their clinical placements.”

School Committee Gives Superintendent High Marks

The following School Committee Update was provided by Kendra Foley, the Chair of the Watertown School Committee:

The Watertown School Committee has been active this summer, meeting monthly to prepare for the upcoming school year and to address routine business. At our July meeting, the School Committee presented its annual evaluation of Dr. Galdston’s work as Superintendent. The review found that Dr. Galdston is meeting her goals, with all 7 members of the School Committee giving her a proficient or exemplary rating in her overall job performance. You can read the full review, with comments from each member of the committee, here. The committee is grateful for the Superintendent’s steady and thoughtful leadership. We are lucky to have her leading the Watertown Public Schools.

Stormwater Drainage at 2 Schools Need to be Repaired

Rain gardens at two Watertown schools that should be trickling water into the ground after storms have not been draining properly and have become standing ponds. The stormwater systems will have to be reinstalled so they work properly. The rain gardens were installed at Hosmer and Cunniff elementary schools during the construction of the new school buildings.
