Police Seek Help Stopping Scam Aimed at Elderly Residents

The Watertown Police Department warns that a scam targeting older residents has been reported recently, and asks residents to alert family, friends and neighbors. The following announcement was provided by the Watertown Police Department:

Important Information!!! REQUESTING YOUR ASSISTANCE

There is currently a group of individuals targeting senior citizens by way of a telephone scam in our community as well as several Metro-Boston cities and towns. An unidentified person will telephone an unsuspecting elder and say that the elder’s grandchild is currently in jail due to some prior event. The unknown suspect will say that they are a lawyer representing the“grandchild” and request the elder to obtain an amount of money to bail the “grandchild” out of jail.

Watertown Fire Department Douses Fire on Porch Before it Spread

A fire that started on the porch of an East Watertown home was extinguished before it could do more damage to the two-family home. On May 11 at about 3:25 p.m. Watertown Fire and Police were called to an Elton Avenue home when a fire was spotted on a porch. “The residents were alerted by a neighboring witness who was sitting on his front porch and noticed the fire and ran over to let the residents know,” said Watertown Police Lt. James O’Connor. Fire and police were called, and hen they arrived, all the residents were safely out of their home. The Watertown Fire Department was able to bring the fire under control.

Police Log: Family Home When Man Breaks In, Man Looking to Rent Home is Scammed

May 8, 1:22 a.m.: A family from Hillside Road called police after they heard a loud bang and an unknown man came into their home. When officers arrived they went into the home and confronted a man in the kitchen and were able to take him into custody. When the break-in occurred, a woman was upstairs sleeping with her 2-year-old child and the husband was downstairs in the living room playing video games. The wife called 911 and said that a man had broken the glass in the rear door and was in the kitchen.

Watertown Firefighter Graduates from Fire Academy

Watertown Firefighter Jake Louro recently graduated from the Massachusetts Fire Academy. The Watertown Fire Department recently welcomed its newest graduate from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy. On April 24, 2020, Firefighter Jake Louro graduated from the Academy’s 10 week training program, said Watertown Fire Chief Bob Quinn. “Firefighter Louro has returned to the firehouse to serve the citizens of Watertown,” Quinn said. “Due to the COVID-19 situation the graduation ceremony was limited to the graduates only.

Man Arrested After Leading Police on Chase While Riding a Scooter

Police placed a Waltham man under arrest after he led them on a chase in Watertown on his scooter. On May 7, at 2:27 p.m., an officer monitoring traffic at the corner of Main and Cross streets saw a Vespa-style scooter going approximately 50 mph, on the wrong side of the road while heading east, said Watertown Police Lt. James O’Connor. The operator, later identified as Neil Ozzy Frajul, 26, of Waltham, was not wearing a helmet, nor was he wearing eye protection. At that point the officer tried to stop the scooter, O’Connor said. “The scooter failed to stop and the rider ended up running the red lights in Watertown Square,” O’Connor said.

Police Log: Man Busted After Driving on 3 Wheels, Driver Hits Two Parked Cars

April 28, 7:16 p.m.: A Toyota pickup struck a parked car in the parking lot of Stop & Shop on Pleasant Street, which pushed the car into another parked vehicle. A caller reported the accident to police and said the driver may be intoxicated. Officers found the driver still in his vehicle and knocked several times before the driver responded. He appeared to be in a daze and showed signs of impairment.

Police Log: Man Wanted on Rape Charges Caught, Scammer Steals $24K from Resident

April 24, 11:07 p.m.: An officer patrolling the parking lot at Victory Field noticed a vehicle parked there with the motor running, but with the lights off. The officer conducted a routine query of the license plate and found out that the owner was wanted on warrants. The officer confirmed the driver was the owner and placed the suspect, Gregorio C. DaSilva, 29, of Lowell, under arrest. He was wanted on a warrant out of Haverhill District Court for three charges of rape.
