Boston Bruins Alumni Playing in Watertown to Help Science Club for Girls

On October 7 the Boston Bruins Alumni will be playing against Team Salesforce in a benefit game for Science Club for Girls (scienceclubforgirls.org) at the John A. Ryan Arena. 

Former Bruins scheduled to participate include Terry O’Reilly, Rick Middleton, Ken Linesman, Mike Milbury, Andy Brickley, Bob Sweeney, Tim Sweeney, Ken Hidge Jr., Reggie Lemelin, Bruce Shoebottom, Bob Beers, Jean-Yves Roy and more! All proceeds benefit SCFG’s mission to foster excitement, confidence and literacy in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) for girls from underrepresented communities by providing free, experiential programs and maximizing meaningful interactions with women mentors in STEM. Today, SCFG serves more than 1,400 young woman across 24 community-based centers each year. Charity Golf Tournament Held in Memory of State Trooper from Watertown

A charity golf tournament will be held in honor of State Trooper David Timperio of Bedford, who grew up in Watertown and died suddenly at the age of 50 in 2015. The Watertown Recreation Department sent out the following information:

Fundraiser Coming Up for Group Started by Watertown Resident to Help Homeless

Watertown resident Joanna Munson-Palomba started Cards4aCause to help the homeless with monthly gift cards. Later this month the group will hold a fundraiser for the organization. Cards4aCause sent out the following information:

Watertown Police Hurricane Relief Drive Brings in Donations From Far and Wide

When a call for donations for the victims of Hurricane Harvey went out from the Watertown Police and Fire department in late August, people responded in droves from Watertown and communities as far away as Plymouth. 

By Thursday afternoon, half of the Police Department’s sally port – which can fit at least four cars – was filled with cans of food, diapers, shampoo, pet food and much more. The donations were picked up by a truck from a group teaming up with Curt Schilling’s foundation, Operation Bullpen. Maria Carrion, a Watertown emergency dispatcher who helped organize the drive, said people from all over starting bringing items to the Police Station. “People at different companies, different high schools, not just from Watertown, started doing their own collections and bringing it here,” Carrion said. Officer Rick Munger, who also organized the effort, said Watertown’s hurricane collection got good publicity.

Couple Dealing with ALS Gets Donations from Rotary Club, Sullivan Tire

Karen and Steven Mey have been sweethearts since high school, but they now face a life-changing challenge after Karen was diagnosed with ALS. They have been given helping hands from their community to assist the couple deal with Karen’s limited mobility. Karen received the diagnosis of ALS – also called Lou Gehrig’s Disease – in June, but they symptoms began four or five years ago. “I had a pain in my right hand which lead to weakness in my right arm,” Karen said. “Then I began to have weakness in my left arm, and then it went to my legs.

Watertown Chef Competing to Make Best Steak in Culinary Fight Club

Watertown’s Chef Mike Fucci will battle fellow chefs to see who can grill up the best steak at the Culinary Fight Club in Newton, and the proceeds will go to fight hunger. The Culinary Fight Club will be held Monday, July 31 from 6-9 p.m. at Hotel Indigo Boston-Newton Riverside and will raise money for Fight2Feed and Three Squares. Fucci, who runs Chef Mike’s Catering in Watertown and is a winner on Food Network’s Cutthroat Kitchen, will compete against Jes Childers of Port Bistro, Arty Bruno of Grill 139, Douglas Rodrigues of North Square Oyster, Drew Blanckenberg of Cricket Cafe and Catering and Justin Rexroad of Clipper Tavern. The chefs will each attempt to make the perfect steak. Attendees can sample each chef’s creation and vote for their favorite.

Paddle to Work and Raise Money for Charles River Watershed Association

On Friday, July 28, people will paddle the Charles River on their way to work to celebrate a healthy river and raise funds for Charles River Watershed Association (CRWA). People participating in Paddle to Work Day hosted by Charles River Canoe and Kayak will kayak from Soldier’s Field Road in Allston/Brighton 5 miles downstream to Kendall Square in Cambridge. Individuals who work in Kendall Square will have paddled to work, while others can take public transportation to their desired destinations. People can purchase tickets for the event at paddleboston.com/paddle2work and may reserve a single or double kayak or sign up to bring their own boat. Charles River Canoe and Kayak will donate all ticket proceeds to Charles River Watershed Association to support its work protecting and restoring the Charles River.

Boys & Girls Club Macy’s Fundraiser, Get Your Tickets for the Club’s Golf Tourney

Watertown Boys & Girls Club announced it is participating in the Macy’s Shop for a Cause Charity Challenge. This friendly competition has non-profit organizations go head to head to see who can raise the most money for their cause. The organization with the most dollars raised at the end of the competition (August 9) wins the grand prize of $100,000 from Macy’s, with runner-ups receiving large prizes as well. There are also added incentives throughout the competition encouraging organizations to meet weekly goals to earn cash prizes. Watertown Boys & Girls Club’s goal is to raise $2,500 during the challenge.
