Watertown Boys & Girls Club Receives Grants from True Value, Lowe’s to Improve Club

The Watertown Boys & Girls Club received a pair of grants to help improve the Clubhouse on Whites Avenue, Club representatives announced. True Value Grant Provides Paint

As students across Watertown get ready to go back to school, Watertown Boys & Girls Club is getting a fresh coat of paint thanks to a partnership with Waltham True Value. The Club is one of many across the nation selected to receive a “Painting a Brighter Future” grant. Every day, 11 million kids are left unsupervised after school. Boys & Girls Clubs are there to provide kids with quality after-school programming to keep them on track to academic success and a great future.

Watertown Group Raises Money to Help Families Impacted by Violence

A group from Watertown raised $1,600 during the 22nd annual Louis D. Brown Peace Institute Mother’s Day March for Peace. The organization which helps families who have lost loved ones to violence. The group is named after a teen from Boston who was committed to ending gang violence, but in 1993 he was killed by crossfire during a shootout. The march takes place in Dorchester each Mother’s Day. The group from Watertown included Town Councilors Tony Palomba and Caroline Bays.

Dozens of Groups Awarded Grants from Watertown Community Foundation

Watertown Community Foundation held its annual spring grant awards evening at the Mosesian Center for the Arts on Thursday June 7. The following grants were
awarded in two categories:Program Grants awards grants designed to help organizations that serve Watertown, develop new or continue existing programs with an educational focus (broadly defined). These are programs that operate outside of the Watertown’s public schools. Charles River Conservancy — Conservancy Volunteers Program
The Charles River Conservancy supports the Conservancy Volunteer’s programs efforts in the Charles River Parklands in Watertown. The Plumbing Museum — Comedy Play Fest at the Plumbing Museum
The Plumbing Museum will present a program of short plays inspired by materials in the Plumbing Museum and bring theater to new audiences in an unexpected venue.

Watertown Community Foundation Merging with Watertown Education Foundation

The Watertown Community Foundation and the Watertown Educational Foundation joined forces and cemented their two-year school grant partnership with a merger of the organizations in February 2018. Together, they combine over forty years of fundraising and grant making to the Watertown Public Schools. This official unification provides the Watertown school community a consolidated source of support for innovative educational programs and activities. The merged organization will continue to be known as the Watertown Community Foundation and the President of the Watertown Educational Foundation, Elaina Griffith, joined the board of the Watertown Community Foundation. “For the past two years, the Community Foundation and the Educational Foundation have run a combined school grants program.

Marshall Home Fund Presents Grants to Programs Helping Older Adults

The following information was provided by the Marshall Home Fund:

Watertown’s Marshall Home Fund held its annual grant award ceremony on May 15, providing nearly $70,000 to 13 local organizations that serve older adults. Though its grant making, MHF helps Watertown be an age friendly community, one where older residents can be healthy and productive. The World Health Organization and the AARP have established specific goals for a community seeking to be age friendly. The 2018 grantees of the Marshall Home Fund will
provide programs and services that address many of these goals, as summarized below. Direct health, mental health, and social services for vulnerable individuals: Springwell’s Elder Independence and Safety Fund ($7,000); Watertown Council on Aging’s Emergency Assistance Block Grant ($750); Wayside Youth and Family Support Network’s Annual Health Fair at the Housing Authority ($1,500); and Watertown Health Department’s Compassionate Connections VIII Program addressing challenges associated with severe clutter ($2,500).

Three hundred people came out on Saturday to volunteer at 22 locations during the fifth annual Watertown Helps Out! State Sen. Will Brownsberger and State Rep. Jonathan Hecht helped kick off Watertown’s annual townwide day of service at Hosmer Elementary School, then people went to work on their project. Community non-profits identify projects they need done. This year five new projects were added. The projects included gardening and yard work, assembling raised beds, cleaning trash from bicycle paths and parks or washing furniture in a community center.

It’s Not Too Late to Sign Up for the Watertown Helps Out Day of Service

There’s still time to sign up to volunteer in this Saturday’s Watertown Helps Out event, hosted by Watertown Community Foundation. Watertown Helps Out!, the fifth annual Community Day of Service, kicks off Saturday, May 5, 8:30 a.m. at the Hosmer School Cafeteria. Join us on Saturday, May 5, 8:30-9:30 a.m. at the Hosmer School Cafeteria for light refreshments. Then get a T-shirt and head out to your chosen project! Projects can be anything from gardening and yard work, assembling raised beds, cleaning trash from bicycle paths and parks or washing furniture in a community center. Most run from 10:00 a.m. to mid-afternoon, and many can be done for as little as an hour.

Marshall Home Fund Presenting Grants at Awards Ceremony

Please join the Marshall Home Fund at its annual Program Grant Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, May 15, 3:30 p.m. at the Watertown Public Library. The MHF will distribute a total of $70,000 to the following organizations for programs that will benefit Watertown’s older adults: MetroWest Community Development, Mosesian Center for Arts, New Repertory Theater, Perkins School for the Blind, Project Literacy, Springwell, Watertown Council on Aging, Watertown Families Together, Watertown Farmer’s Market. Watertown Fire
Department, Watertown Health Department, Wayside Youth and Family Support. Established in 2005, the Marshall Home Fund is a nonprofit, community-based charitable foundation dedicated to serving Watertown’s older adult population. MHF also provides financial assistance to elderly individuals in urgent need.
