Watertown Asserts It Has Met Affordable Housing Goals, Can Prevent 40B Projects

Watertown officials believe they have found a seldom used way to meet the state’s affordable housing requirements, which would mean developers could not build high-density residential projects without having to go through the town’s normal zoning rules. The state law made to encourage the creation of affordable housing, often called Chapter 40B or just 40B, requires towns with less than 10 percent of its housing units that are officially designated as affordable units to allow projects with 20 percent or more affordable units to be approved in a streamlined process. Meeting the requirement is known as reaching “safe harbor.” Watertown has not reached the 10 percent threshold. There is, however, a second method to reach safe harbor, which is having 1.5 percent or more of a community’s land devoted to affordable housing.

A new group seeking to form connections between local businesses and entrepreneurs will host a social event in November. The Watertown Business Coalition will hold the event on Thursday, Nov. 21 at Donahue’s Bar & Grill. The group was started by a group of people doing business in Watertown and town residents looking to make local connections, and to support and strengthen the Watertown business community. 3 Murals Inspired by Watertown Going up at Arsenal Yards, Stores Opening Soon

Three murals will be created at Arsenal Yards by, from left to right, artist Louise ‘Ouizi’ Jones, painter Kim Carlino, and artist Felipe Ortiz. The first stores at Arsenal Yards, the project renovating the former mall, will be opening in coming weeks, and the mixed-use project will also feature murals inspired by Watertown created by three artists, according to owners of the mall. Arsenal Yards is installing three large-scale murals at various locations around the property, coinciding with the Fall 2019 debut of its first round of restaurants and retailers. Inspired in part by the lush natural beauty of Arsenal Park, the Charles River, and the history of its distinctive East End Watertown location, the mural artworks are currently being created by locally and nationally recognized artists commissioned by Arsenal Yards. Creating a vibrant and eclectic environment, one that includes one-of-a-kind public artworks, is part of the plan to make Arsenal Yards a new and unique urban village.

Council OKs Entering Agreement to Allow Recreational Marijuana Dispensary in Watertown

The Town Council put its support behind a Host Community Agreement with the group seeking to sell recreational marijuana at a site in East Watertown. The agreement is with Natural Selection, also known as NS AJO Holdings, which has already been approved to sell medical marijuana from the site at 23 Elm St. The location is behind the Residence Inn by Marriott and across the street from the Watertown Mall parking lot. The agreement applies to sales of recreational marijuana, which is also called adult-use marijuana. It puts into place fees to be paid by the dispensary to the Town to cover services, such as police, fire and permitting.
