Small Saves Plays with His Cat in This Week’s Cartoon

James DeMarco grew up in Watertown and became a goaltender at age 5. It’s his life’s passion to stand between the pipes and keep the puck out of the net. Combining this with the love of cartooning Small Saves emerged in 1991 and took on a life of his own. “To play goal – then come home and draw Small Saves — is my ideal definition of a good day.”

LETTER: Resident Endorses School Committee Candidate

I’m writing to urge Watertown voters to vote for Sheila Krishnan for School Committee. Sheila and her husband Steve, both educators themselves, have chosen to rise their kids in Watertown because they love the level of community engagement they’ve found here. I first got to know Sheila through the Kingian Response Team, and we have connected over our shared interest in history and ongoing learning despite our different personal backgrounds. Since then, I’ve watched with admiration at her success in bringing together different parts of the community in service of our youth. She brings a rare combination of deep insight and non-nonsense smarts to complex problems. She helps colleagues get to the heart of the matter with grace and wisdom.

Sylvia Khalarian

The following announcement was provided by Haymakers for Hope:

This October, Watertown resident, Sylvia Khalarian, will be fighting for a cure, literally, in the annual Haymakers for Hope Belles of the Brawl charity boxing event. On Thursday, October 9th at the well-known MGM Music Hall at Fenway, Khalarian along with 25 other brave fighters residing in the New England area will be stepping into the ring at this year’s event to combat cancer and raise money for their main beneficiary, The Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Since having their first event in 2011, Haymakers for Hope has raised over $35 million for cancer research, awareness, survivorship, and care. Haymakers is now accepting registrations from everyday professionals in the Greater Boston area who have no prior boxing experience and are eager to learn the art of boxing. Participants will have the chance to train at local partner gyms over the course of four months, culminating in a live fight night at the state-of-the-art MGM Music Hall, performing in front of a sold-out crowd and fighting for a cure.
