Weekend Fun: Classic Cars, Summerfest, Tour of Makerspace, Writing Event & More

There is a lot happening on Saturday this weekend: a classic car show, a writing in nature gathering at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, a meeting of the Watertown Run Club, and a tour of the Hatch Makerspace. I’m going to start my weekend on Friday at the Linx Summerfest. Isn’t it fun to eat food from food trucks while strolling vendor booths or discovering your next craft exploration at a demonstration? The next morning, you can head over to the Majestic 7 to catch a family friendly movie.

Weekend Fun: Juneteenth, Fiddler on the Roof, Mediterranean Night & More

It’s mid-June and there’s a lot going on this weekend in town June 19 isn’t on the weekend, but the celebration of Juneteenth is! If you are a gardener, there’s a way to share your plants that have multiplied, and at the same time receive more for free at the Plant and Seed Swap at the library. If you are celebrating Father’s Day, you can take your dad to a whiskey tasting at Arsenal Yards or to a celebration of Mediterranean food and music at the Armenian Cultural and Education Center. For the younger set a performance of Fiddler on the Roof by the Watertown Children’s Theater is sure to bring lots of smiles. 

WATERTOWN’S JUNETEENTH CELEBRATIONSunday, June 16, 2-4 p.m.114 Riverside St.This will be the fourth annual Juneteenth celebration in Watertown. There will be music, crafts, a dance party, and a kids’ book reading.

This is the time of year for counting herring at the Watertown Dam, and they always need volunteers to do that! (Sign up here!) The Charles River Watershed Association has created a new festival to celebrate these special local fish. There’s fun to be had and much to learn about the fish, the dam, and the river.

Watertown is going to be a quiet, quite warm place on Memorial Day weekend as people are headed to greener/hillier/sandier pastures. Of course, it is a time to remember those who have given their lives, so you can pop into the Poppy Social at the Commander’s mansion on Friday in their remembrance. If looking for some air conditioning, pay a visit to see some of the art in town. There is the town sculpture garden in the open air, and a number of local galleries with current exhibits. There is also art to be made in a painting workshop.

Eden Rays will perform at Mount Auburn Cemetery to celebrate the
100th Anniversary homecoming of the Bigelow Chapel organ. This is a weekend for your ears to experience a dazzling variety of music in a wide range of settings. Catch some original music at Bigelow Chapel in Mount Auburn Cemetery, reminisce about the good ole’ 80’s and 90’s at the Jana Grill, and explore the city during our first annual Watertown Porchfest. There is also time for more quiet gatherings, a one-woman show at the Mosesian Center, a book launch at the Library, and for those reveling in the joys of spring gardening, a plant sale at the Gore Estate. It’s time to get your hands dirty and your garden beautifully productive.

A Watertown studio will host a mother-daugther yoga class for Mother’s Day. Given that it’s Mother’s Day weekend, let’s explore the range of activities that you can do with your children or to help others’ children. Everyone can put their phones away to get up close and personal with trucks, plant some seeds, experience some theater thrills, or give a gift of life by donating blood for the Boston Children’s Hospital. And if you’d rather not think about children, head to the Watertown Center for Healing Arts to connect with other adults. This is a weekend for spring cleaning, so let’s get our hands dirty! You can bring your dusty bike out of the basement and get it ready to enjoy all the new bike lanes around or help to clean up our green spaces through Watertown Helps Out. If you’re a New England history buff, you will enjoy the Watertown Historical Society talk about restoring a 300 year-old home. Then head home and work on your own, glad that it’s only 100 years old or so. Hungry after all that work?
