Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian announced that his office will be hosting two upcoming sessions of the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office (MSO) Special Citizens Academy in early 2018, according to a press release.
The Special Citizens Academy is a free, four-week program for local residents with developmental disabilities. The program is designed for residents ages 18, and above, who have an interest in public safety and learning more about the MSO.
“Last year’s program was such an incredible experience for both the Cadets and our staff. We are excited to continue the Academy with these upcoming sessions,” said Sheriff Koutoujian. “This is an opportunity to share the work of our office with interested members of the community from across the county.”
The first session will begin at Belmont Town Hall on January 9 and be run in conjunction with the Belmont Police Department, Belmont Recreation Department, and the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services. Classes will meet for two hours, 6-8 p.m., each Tuesday between January 9 and 30 and include presentations on the role of the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office; the MSO’s K-9 Unit; Internet Safety and Awareness; Fire Safety and First Aid; as well as Mobile Operations. The Academy will conclude with a graduation ceremony on January 30.
The second session will be held at the MSO’s Training Academy at 40 Brick Kiln Road in Chelmsford. The classes will begin in March and cover the same topics as the January program. A limited number of spots are available for both Academies and will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Those interested in attending can contact Community Affairs Director Ken Doucette at 978-495-7408.
