This spring, Mount Auburn Cemetery is introducing Early-Bird Hours, offering a unique opportunity to experience its beauty in a whole new morning light. For the first time, the Cemetery’s Main Entrance (580 Mount Auburn St., Cambridge) will open daily at 6 AM in April and May, allowing visitors to experience the serene beauty of the Cemetery in the quiet, early morning hours.

These early hours offer a rare glimpse into nature awakening—the soft glow of sunrise over the Cemetery’s landscape and tree collections, the arrival of migratory birds, and a stillness that invites reflection. Whether seasoned birders, beginners just discovering the joys of birdwatching, those who simply love peaceful morning walks, and more, visitors can take in the early morning Mount Auburn landscape like never before.

Mount Auburn is a renowned birding destination and an important habitat for both migratory and regional birds. Its thoughtfully designed landscape, historic trees, and diverse horticultural collections create a sanctuary for wildlife and visitors alike. Recognized as an Important Bird Area by Mass Audubon, our 175-acre landscape offers a rare opportunity to witness nature in motion.

During early morning hours, visitors can spot a variety of colorful species, including warblers, Indigo Buntings, and Scarlet Tanagers, as they move among the budding trees. Late April is ideal for beginners to catch sight of early arrivals, while May brings peak migration, with up to 100 species filling the Cemetery with birdsong.

Walk among blossoming cherries, magnolias, and daffodils in April, followed by crabapples, dogwoods, and rhododendrons in May, as the landscape comes alive with color and fragrance. With accessible paths and quiet resting spots, visitors of all ages can immerse themselves in Mount Auburn’s landscape.

  • Early-Bird Hours: 6 AM – 7 PM (April 1 – May 15) | 6 AM – 8 PM (May 16 – May 31)
  • Quiet Hours: 6 AM – 8 AM (no Cemetery vehicles or machinery in operation)
  • Getting to Mount Auburn: Free admission, easy public transit via Bus Routes 71 & 73 from Harvard Square
  • Parking: Available on roads without a green line; please keep all wheels on pavement
  • Respect the Space: Mount Auburn is an active cemetery—please be mindful of ongoing services and grieving visitors.
