The following announcement was provided by Russell Cooperative Preschool:
Exciting additions are coming to Russell Cooperative Preschool this fall with the launch of an Extended Day option designed to offer families more flexibility. Beginning in September 2025, Russell will offer an Extended Day option from 2 to 4 PM, with families able to choose from one to five days per week and the ability to add days as needed.
For nearly 50 years, Russell Cooperative Preschool has been a cornerstone of early childhood education in Watertown. Established in 1975 by a group of parents committed to providing a warm, supportive, and open learning environment, Russell has remained steadfast in its mission to foster social, emotional, and creative growth through play-based learning.
A Natural Extension of a Time-Tested Philosophy
Russell’s Extended Day option will be in addition to its existing curriculum, designed to further support young learners’ exploration, creativity, and independence. With children ranging in age from 3 to 5 years old, Russell offers flexible scheduling options, allowing families to select a school routine that best meets their needs.
“Our program has always been rooted in understanding each child’s readiness and individual family circumstances,” said Director Melissa Hresko. “We recognize that many families today struggle with the traditional preschool schedule. By extending the day at Russell for those who may need it, children in our program can spend their afternoons engaging in meaningful play and social interactions in a familiar and nurturing setting, while giving parents and caregivers more flexibility.”
A Play-Based Approach to Learning
Russell’s educational philosophy emphasizes hands-on learning, creativity, and collaboration. Outdoor play remains a core component of the school day — and will be an integral part of the Extended Day program — with children exploring the spacious playground in all seasons. Indoors, classrooms are intentionally designed with simplicity in mind to foster deep imaginative play.
From baking bread and making applesauce to painting, drawing, and block building, children engage in a variety of activities that encourage independence and self-expression. Older students are introduced to craft projects like needlework and finger knitting, which enhance fine motor skills and patience. Daily storytelling and singing traditions enrich the school experience, connecting children to cultural heritage and nurturing their love of language and rhythm.
A Supportive, Inclusive Community
At Russell, the classroom environment promotes cooperation, inclusion, and respect. Teachers gently support social interactions and play while encouraging children to take ownership of their community through collaborative rule-making and thoughtful discussions about kindness and inclusion. The school’s proactive approach ensures that all students feel welcomed, valued, and engaged in their learning journey.
With the introduction of the Extended Day hours, Russell Cooperative Preschool continues to evolve while staying true to the values that have made it a beloved institution for nearly half a century.
