Gianna Coppola and the Raiders girls\’ basketball team are undefeated and won the Middlesex League title.
Watertown’s girls’ teams have had a successful winter, with the hockey and basketball teams grabbing league championships.
The hockey team, which is a joint team with Belmont, won the Middlesex League Freedom Division with a 7-2 win at Stoneham and a 5-0 win against Wilmington. They then beat Medford 6-1 and Melrose 4-0. The Raiders have a record of 16-3-1 and are ranked 7th in the Boston Globe Top 20 and ESPN Boston ranked them 11th.
The girls’ hoops team just keeps rolling and is 17-0 after a 56-28 win over Melrose. The Raiders have impressed pollsters. The Boston Herald EMass and Boston Globe Top 20 polls both have Watertown ranked 5th, and they are rated 12th in the ESPN Boston poll.
Both teams will learn their opponents in the state tournament this week as basketball brackets come out Friday and hockey selections are Saturday. The boys basketball and hockey teams will also join them in the MIAA tournament.
Runner Breaks His Own Record at Div. 4 Meet
Watertown junior continued his record breaking indoor track season with a outstanding performance at the MIAA Div. 4 Indoor Championships on Saturday.
Lin already broke a 40-year-old record at the MSTCA Elite Meet/Coaches Invitational in January. On Saturday, he improved his own record by a running at 1:22.98 in the 600 at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center. He improved by .04 seconds and finished third in the division meet, which qualified him for the All-State Indoor Track Championships on Feb. 21.
The Raiders placed 10th in the Div. 4 meet. Also headed to the All-State Meet is the Raiders’ 4 x 400 relay, which came in second place with a time of 3:30.16.
In other results, senior Brian Dallacosta placed sixth in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.56. Senior Amin Touri got 10th place in the one-mile run with a time of 4:51.84. Senior Prosper Lubega jumped 5-08.00 in the high jump, which was 11th best. Junior Jeremy Breen came in 20th in the 2-mile run.
On the girls’ side, the 4 x 800 relay team placed sixth with a time of 10:19.43. Junior Katherine Tolman placed ninth in the 600 with a time of 1:41.99. Senior Keegan Duguay ran a 9.67 seconds in the 55 meter dash, which was 14th best. The 4 x 200 relay placed 19th.
The team came in 33rd at the Div. 4 meet.
Wrestlers Heading to State Meet
Six Watertown wrestlers qualified for the State Meet after finishing in the top 5 at the Div. 3 Central Sectionals.
Sammy Leitner came in third in the 120 pound division, Nick Stanizzi got fourth at 106, Evan Foun placed fourth in the 113 pound division, and Alain Mondesir at 220 also finished fourth, according to a report on Wicked Local Watertown.
Fifth-place finishers will go as alternates. Farid Mawanda at 160 and Alec Cambell at 285 finished fifth and will attend the state meet as alternates.
