The City of Watertown provided the following announcement:

Congratulations to Ernie Thebado, the City of Watertown’s new permanent Recreation Director effective Monday, July 29, 2024.

Ernie has been a pillar of the Watertown Recreation Department since he was hired as the Assistant Director in 2008. In this role Ernie oversaw the Department’s programs, services, and events; expanded programming; cultivated strong partnerships between the City and community groups like Wayside and the Boys and Girls Club; and served as a trusted point of contact for the community and City staff.

Prior to joining the City, Ernie worked for the Watertown Boys and Girls Club for 20 years, most recently as the Assistant Executive Director, where he oversaw all programming as well as the day-to-day operations of the organization and the facility.

Please join us in congratulating Ernie on his new role!

  1. Ernie is the best, maybe the best employee for the city of Watertown. Always a smile and a laugh and, has the aura of someone who is truly in love with his job.

  2. Congrats Ernie – well deserved – looking forward to working with you. Watertown youth sports has struggled over the 15 years with many sports seeing declining numbers resulting in Watertown teams and players leaving and having to join with other towns in the area (Belmont and Waltham).

Supporting youth sports should not be viewed as a chore – it is critical to the physical and mental health of many of our participants and develops a great sense of community.

For too long, youth organizations have had to deal with a bureaucratic approach to supporting our programs. There has been no defined plan or strategic direction/guidance provided from the City. Change was required and frankly long overdue.

Watertown Youth Soccer is ready to work with you (and the City) and all other youth sports programs to develop a City Wide Plan for Youth Sports that will ensure Watertown can support our kids in our community.

We are ready when you are!
