The following information was provided by the Watertown Police Department.
Arrest
Jan. 31, 6:10 p.m.: A witness reported seeing a man walking up to vehicles in the parking lot behind the Watertown Free Public Library and trying to open their doors. Police found a man fitting the description of the suspect in the library and spoke with him. The suspect said he thought it was his friend’s car and when he opened the door there was someone inside. Another witness was located who said she saw the man try the door of one her co-worker’s car. He saw her looking and made motion patting his pockets as if looking for his keys. The man then moved to a vehicle two spaces down. When he saw she was still watching, he said, “Oh, I can’t find my keys.” While police were speaking with the suspect he tried to discard a pill, but officers located it. The 27-year-old Watertown man was arrested on two counts of attempting to commit a crime – breaking and entering a motor vehicle, and one count of possession of a Class B drug.
Incidents
Jan. 30, 2:15 p.m.: A resident reported she lost her cellphone at Dunkin Donuts on Main Street between 11 and 11:15 a.m. on Jan. 28. The manager of the store looked at security video and found a woman in line behind the woman who lost her phone pick up the phone and put it in her pocket. Police located the phone, and are in the process of identifying the suspect.
Feb. 1, 9 a.m.: Someone spray painted two tags on the bucket of a snow removal truck at the Watertown Mall. It was parked behind the mall.
Feb. 2, 5:15 p.m.: An apartment in a building on Riverside Street was broken into. The resident left at 2 p.m. and returned at 5 p.m. and found the door had been pried open. Several pieces of jewelry were missing from the apartment. Police are investigating the incident.
Feb. 3, 2:30 p.m.: A Paul Street resident reported that a custom grill cover was taken off his BMW. It went missing on the overnight between Feb. 2 and Feb. 3. No other damage was reported, and the grill cover is worth $2,000.
Feb. 4, 12:30 p.m.: Management at Stop & Shop on Watertown Street called police to report they suspect an employee taking money from the register. They reviewed security video and saw the employee take $400 from the cash register. The next day, the employee did not come to work and the store could not reach the man after several attempts. A 23-year-old man from Newton was summonsed to Waltham District Court for larceny over $250.
