A stellar second quarter and a late touchdown pushed the Watertown football team past host Burlington for the 31-28 win on Friday night.
The Raiders trailed 6-3 after one quarter, but then got touchdowns from three different players to enter halftime with a 24-14 lead.
First, running back Zack Rimsa scored on a three yard run. Then it was quarterback Deon Smith’s turn. He scored on an 8 yard run.
Smith had his hand in the next score when he threw to receiver John Korte, who scored a 62-yard touchdown.
Burlington was not done yet, however, and touchdowns in the third and fourth quarter gave the Red Devils a 28-24 lead.
The Smith to Korte combination paid off again, when the receiver grabbed a 19-yard touchdown reception, and the Raiders came away with the victory.
With two more games before the playoffs begin, Watertown (4-1, 2-1 in the Middlesex League) is tied for the second best record in North Section Div. 3. Seedings are decided not only on record, but how a team fared against teams in higher divisions, and even how opponents fared in other games. See the formula here (on page 6).
According to the Boston Globe’s power rankings, the Raiders would be the third seed right now.
On Friday, Watertown travels to Wilmington at 7 p.m. and the final game before the playoffs is on Friday, Oct. 21 at Stoneham.
