Watertown Community Gardens will be opening some new plots at Arsenal Park, but before gardeners can start planting the planters must be built.
The former street hockey area at Arsenal Park will be the location for the new garden plots, said Terese Hammerle, chair of the board of Watertown Community Gardens.
“Between the tennis courts and the basketball courts, we will build raised beds on the solid surface,” Hammerle said.
A work day will be held on July 23 (with a rain date of July 24). Volunteers are needed to build the planters, Hammerle said.
Once completed, there will be around 50 new plots for Watertown residents to farm. This would more than double the plots in the Community Gardens. The garden on Grove Street has about 40 plots, Hammerle said.
Currently there is a waiting list for plots, but Hammerle expects everyone on the list to get a plot at the Arsenal Park garden, plus more for interested gardeners.
Those who get the new plots still have time for a crop this year, Hammerle said.
“People who help us out can get a fall crop in – garlic, spinach, kale,” Hammerle said.
The new garden was made possible through the cooperation of several groups in town.
“We are thankful to the Conservation Commission, the Recreation Department, the Planning Department and the Department of Public Works,” Hammerle said.
