Arrests
June 6, 12:34 a.m.: A vehicle went off the road on Pleasant Street and struck a street sign, a fire hydrant, and a tree. Police responded and found a 2002 Honda Accord on a grassy area near the Watertown Mews apartments. The only occupant of the vehicle was standing outside the car. He was checked for injuries but had none. When officers spoke to him they detected a strong odor of alcohol. He admitted to consuming alcohol before driving, and when asked how much he said eight beers. He did not pass four field sobriety tests. Police also found he did not have his driver’s license. Nestor Lopez-Escobar, 43, of Waltham, was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol — a second offense, unlicensed driving, marked lanes violation, speeding, and a seatbelt violation. The hydrant was damaged and had to be repaired by the Department of Public Works.

Police responded and confirmed it was the person’s moped. While they were there, a person matching the description of the suspect showed up in an Uber. The suspect lived in the home, and when speaking to officers he was very compliant and cooperative. He admitted to stealing the moped and was apologetic. When looking around the home, police found a second moped that had been reported stolen from Target on Feb. 2. The suspect admitted to stealing that moped, too. June 12, 10 a.m.: A bicyclist and a driver got into an argument at the corner of Galen and Watertown streets. The bicyclist said the driver cut him off on Galen Street. He said he went up to the driver of the pickup truck and exchanged words with him. He said the driver then picked up a wooden stick and struck him on the helmet while seated in the vehicle, and then got out of the pickup and struck the bicyclist with the stick. The driver then got into the vehicle and left the scene. The cyclist was not injured. Police were able to track down the vehicle and the driver came to the Police Station. He said he was unaware he cut the bicycle off, and said the cyclist pulled up to him, slapped him in the face, and began punching the driver-side window. He did not admit to striking the cyclist. A witness saw the incident and captured some of it on video. The witness said the pickup cut off the bike. The video showed the pickup driver getting out of vehicle, grab a wooden stick from the bed of the pickup, and the man struck the bike’s front wheel. The driver, a 60-year-old man from Cambridge, was summoned to Waltham District Court for assault with a dangerous weapon.
