Richard ‘Dick’ Greenough, Sr. Aged 91, died peacefully on Sep 17, 2021. Richard was born on October 15, 1929 to Richard and Mary Greenough.
He grew up in Watertown and attended Watertown High School and Huntington Prep, where he made his mark as an outstanding football player. He met the love of his life and best friend, Gloria Anne Kelley, during high school in 1945. They married in 1948.
Richard is survived by Gloria and their five children, Richard, Jr., Mark, Jody, Philip and Paul; his children’s spouses Susan, Margaret, Patrick Menton, Jamie Parker and Janet, and their 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Richard took great pride in his career with HP Hood, MIT and the Town of Watertown, as well as his place as a founder of Watertown Pop Warner football, where he was head coach for almost 20 years. He was also past president of the Ancient Order of the Hibernians of Watertown. After 67 years in Watertown, Richard and Gloria retired to Brewster and then Falmouth, before residing most recently in Newton. Richard was an avid reader of American history, and as his children grew up, enjoyed traveling across the US and to his beloved Ireland.
A devout Catholic, Richard lived his life for his wife, children, grandchildren, and extended family. Richard will live on in the hearts and minds of his family and those who knew him for his humorous quips and quiet quarrels, especially with Republicans. We are grateful for his many sacrifices, acts of kindness and his dignified influence.
Contributions in his memory can be made to the Watertown Boys & Girls Club.
Family and friends are welcome to come celebrate Dick’s life by gathering for visiting hours in the Nardone Funeral Home, 373 Main St. Watertown on Friday from 4-7 PM. All may gather on Saturday at 10 AM for a Funeral Mass in St. Patrick’s Church, Watertown. Burial private.
Frank and I knew Dick and Gloria and their family for many years. He was a man who had a very calm presence and a wonderful sense of humor. He was a dear friend . Rest in peace.
