The Watertown girls basketball team had two weeks off before its Div. 2 North Section quarterfinal against Danvers, but the Raiders showed no signs of rust as they rolled to a 52-33 win Friday night.
Watertown (18-3) sprinted out to an 18-6 first quarter lead. Raiders’ head coach Pat Ferdinand said things went well from the beginning, even if it was not the way he drew it up for them.
“I think that we started off really really hot, hit some jump shots, but it almost took away from what we wanted to do offensively,” Ferdinand said. “It almost came too quickly. We wanted to dictate tempo on offense.”
Senior forward Felicia Korte lead Watertown offensively with 16 points.
“She did a great job she was able to get to open spots, she was aggressive and assertive the whole entire way,” Ferdinand said. “She also did a good job on the glass rebounding. And had a nice assist near the end.”
Junior center Shannon Murphy had 9 points and senior guard Michaela Antonellis scored 8 for the Raiders. Danvers was lead by senior captain Devan Walsh’s 12 points.
While Danvers (13-9) went down early, they did not just lie down for the top-seeded Raiders.
“Danvers stayed level, stayed focused, even when we gave good pressure. They were being patient against it,” Ferdinand said. “They did a really good job with us.”
Watertown had the same 12 point lead at halftime, 26-14, but then came out hot in the third quarter. Danvers tried to pressure Watertown with a press defense, but the Raiders pulled away for a 43-23 lead at the end of three quarters.
“As the game went on we were able to work against the zone defense,” Ferdinand said. “We did a good job getting the ball up efficiently and running our zone offense.”
Ferdinand sprinkled in his bench players during the fourth quarter, and the game finished 52-33.
Next, the Raiders play in the North Section semifinal against the winner of the Saturday’s Swampscott-Triton game. The day, time and place of Watertown’s next game is yet to be announced.
