The first of Watertown’s new school projects will kick off Wednesday, June 24 with a groundbreaking ceremony at Cunniff Elementary School.
The School Building Committee invites public is invited to the event, which begins at 4:30 p.m. at the school, located at 246 Warren St. in Watertown. Those who attend must wear a mask of face covering due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
The Cunniff is the first of three elementary school projects in town. A new school is planned on the current site. The Hosmer Elementary School will also be replaced and will also house the districts preschool and PreK programs. Construction is expected to being soon. Planning is also underway for a major renovation of Lowell Elementary School, which will also have a major addition.
Two weeks ago, the Town Council approved funding for the new Hosmer and Cunniff schools. The Town will borrow the $103 million for the construction, and will pay it back through the normal Town Budget without going to taxpayers with a Prop. 2 1/2 override.
