Board of Health Considering Loosening Face Covering Order, Town’s COVID-19 Fatalities Grow

Print More

The Watertown Board of Health will consider amending its emergency order requiring face coverings in Town to match the order made by the Governor.

On April 30, the Board of Health adopted an Emergency Order that requires people to wear face coverings over their nose and mouth at all time in public places, indoors or out. Two days later, Gov. Charlie Baker announced a statewide order that requires the wearing of face coverings in places where social distancing is not possible.

The state order included inside all retail store such as grocery stores or pharmacies, as well as, on public transportation. The order, however, allowed for people not to use face coverings when outside if people are able to social distance.

According to Town Manager Michael Driscoll’s COVID-19 Update on May 7, the Board of Health will consider amending its order.

He also announced the latest COVID-19 numbers in Watertown, which included an increase in deaths related to the virus up to 19, two more than Tuesday’s numbers. The town also has 298 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 120 people have recovered. Four town employees have tested positive for the Coronavirus, and two have recovered and are back to work.

The Town of Watertown will soon start new social media accounts specifically for COVID-19 updates. They will be on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Mask and Face Covering Order Took Effect Wednesday, 5/6

The Baker-Polito Administration has ordered all residents over the age of two to use a face covering or mask in public places where maintaining proper social distancing measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is not possible. This statewide order goes into effect on May 6th and supersedes previously issued guidance relative to mask use. This order applies to all workers and customers of businesses and other organizations that are currently open to the public and permitted to operate as COVID-19 Essential Businesses, such as grocery stores, pharmacies, and other retail stores. Residents are also required to wear a mask or face covering at all times when using any means of transportation service or public mass transit. Read the Order here

Emergency Order Mandating Face Coverings

The Watertown Board of Health adopted an Emergency Order on April 30th mandating face coverings effective Monday, May 4th. In light of the issuance by Governor Baker of COVID-19 Order No. 31 Requiring Face Coverings in Public Places Where Social Distancing Is Not Possible, the Board of Health will be considering an amendment to its April 30, 2020 order mandating face coverings in Watertown. The proposed amendment is intended to make the Town’s order consistent with the Governor’s order by requiring face covering be used in outdoor places where social distancing cannot be maintained, clarifying the age at which children are required to wear face coverings, and how enforcement will be undertaken. The Board of Health is hopeful that this amendment will eliminate conflicts with the Governor’s order while maintaining its primary goal of protecting public health.

One thought on “Board of Health Considering Loosening Face Covering Order, Town’s COVID-19 Fatalities Grow

  1. This is good news.

But the fact that Gov. Baker will now allow golf courses to open concerns me very much.

Most 18 hole golf courses are only 100 acres or so.

That’s not very much room for social distancing, is it?

And the surrounding trees make for a very confined space, don’t you think?

    It worries me.
