On Saturday, March 7, 2020, Watertown Democrats held a caucus, electing delegates to the Massachusetts Democratic Party’s May 2020 nominating convention in Lowell. Congresswoman Katherine Clark kicked off the event, telling the 150 assembled Democrats about her efforts to hold the Trump administration accountable.
The caucus was organized by the Watertown Democratic Town Committee. “In 2020, Democrats are energized and ready. We will expand and strengthen our grassroots infrastructure to defeat Donald Trump and elect a Democratic House and Senate this November,” said Committee Chair Steve Owens. “In Watertown and across the Commonwealth, Democrats are motivated like never before to organize and win.”
The caucus elected 25 delegates and five alternates to represent Watertown Democrats at the annual convention. The delegates selected by attendees were Susan Flint, Allison Griggs, Maria Saiz, Diane Tiernan, Rita Colafella, Deb Peterson, Eileen Ryan, Lucy Lovrien, Carolyn Hanke, Laurie Kahn, Mary Landale, Suzannah Jones, Sarwar Amin, Aaron Dushku, Ed Scheinbart, Anthony Palomba, John Gannon, Sheppard Ferguson, David Downes, Diego Ribiero, Matthew Brown, Bill Madsen, David Esopi, Austin Jones and Will Pennington. William Jones, Nick Poser, Caroline Bays, Susan Falkoff and Lisa Feltner were selected as alternates.
Other delegates to the convention from Watertown include Representatives Jonathan Hecht and John Lawn, Governor’s Councilor Marilyn Devaney, Democratic National Committee member Melvin Poindexter and Democratic State Committee members Steve Owens and Tina Poindexter.
The convention will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2020 at the Tsongas Center in Lowell.
“The delegates will gather with Democratic leaders from across Massachusetts to endorse a candidate for U.S. Senate and plan for a grassroots, person-to-person campaign in the fall,” said Owens.
Delegates to the 2020 Massachusetts Democratic Party endorsing convention will select candidates to compete for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate. All 25 delegates selected from Watertown pledged to support current U.S. Senator Ed Markey at the convention.
“I wholeheartedly support Senator Markey because I have seen how much he cares about the people of Massachusetts,” said Town Councilor Caroline Bays. “Whether through his efforts to combat climate change as the author of the Green New Deal, his efforts to save lives through gun safety legislation, or his fight to save net neutrality, Senator Markey has worked hard for Massachusetts. I want a Senator who will put our welfare, and the interests of our country, before his own.”
In addition to delegates who are elected at the caucus, those who meet the qualifications, may apply to be add-on delegates in the following categories: youth, minority, LGBT and disabled.
