Watertown Police seek a man who held up a hair salon Wednesday evening with what turned out to be a gun that shoots blanks.
Shortly after 7 p.m., a man wearing a mask came into a busy Behind the Hair salon on Main Street and robbed it with what appeared to be a gun, said Watertown Police Lt. James O’Connor
“He fired a round and we were able to recover a casing,” O’Connor said. “It was determined it is in fact a starter pistol round.”
The suspect took an undisclosed amount of money, and then left the store from the back. He is believed to have fled on a bicycle heading east toward Watertown Square.
The event was very atypical, O’Connor said.
“It is very unusual,” O’Connor said. “It is a very safe neighborhood, and it is unusual at that time of day.”
Several people witnessed the incident, O’Connor said, because the salon was open and hairdressers and customers were inside. No one was injured in the incident.
The suspect wore a ski mask, sunglasses, a light colored sweatshirt, dark colored jeans, and carried a black backpack, O’Connor said. Witnesses could not give any other details about the man’s appearance.
Detectives responded to the incident and are investigating. Anyone who saw anything suspicious is asked to call the Watertown Police at 617-972-6500.
