The Dorothy and Charles Mosesian Center for the Arts is pleased to announce the details of its annual fundraising event happening on Thursday, May 23, 2019.
ARTS FOR ALL: Mosesian Center Benefit 2019 promises to be a remarkable evening to highlight the importance of Accessibility in the Arts. The event will feature compelling stories of transformation, exceptional entertainment, both visual and tactile art for all to experience, and the celebration of some very special people.
This year, the Center is proud to honor three Mosesian Awardees who encourage us all to experience the arts, each other, and the world, in new and unexpected ways:
• Jon Sarkin – 2019 Mosesian Award for the Arts An acclaimed self-taught artist living in Gloucester, MA. The neurological effects of a stroke in 1989 led him to be wildly prolific. Popular culture, comics, literature, movies and music influence Sarkin’s work, which has been featured in The New Yorker, The New York Times, and Vanity Fair and exhibited both nationally and internationally.
• Kim Charlson – 2019 Mosesian Community Award As the Chairwoman of the Watertown Commission on Disabilities and the President of the American Council of the Blind, Kim has been an outstanding advocate for accessibility in our community.
• Arlene Velleman – 2019 Mosesian Community Award An educator and American Sign Language interpreter who has had a profound impact on expanding access to our youth Performing Arts program, the Watertown Children’s Theatre.
ARTS FOR ALL: Mosesian Center Benefit 2019 will kick off with a stationed dinner reception to delight the senses, followed by the presentation of the 2019 Mosesian Awards, and toe tapping entertainment from Ian Berg and Subject: Matter. Post program reception to follow in the Black Box Theater.
The celebration of Arts Accessibility will coincide with the opening of “Please Touch the Art”. This highly anticipated tactile art exhibition invites sighted and visually impaired visitors to go beyond looking at artwork and encourages them to use their other senses to experience each piece. The exhibit will be open through September 6th and will be accompanied by a History of Accessibility Humanities Exhibition and panel discussion with renowned Arts Accessibility experts.
