The following information was provided by the Watertown Police Department.
Arrests
Jan. 1, 2:57 a.m.: An officer on Arsenal Street clocked a car going 59 mph in a 30 mph zone. The vehicle was pulled over. The driver said he was coming from a bar in Cambridge and admitted to consuming alcohol before driving. He showed signs of impairment, including a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. The driver failed five field sobriety tests. The 38-year-old Waltham man was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol — a second offense, and was cited for speeding.
Jan. 1, 7:53 p.m.: Target security called Police to report a suspected shoplifter was sitting in a vehicle in the parking lot. The woman had been seen taking a PlayStation controller worth $59.99, and walk out without paying. The 49-year-old Watertown woman was arrested on a charge of shoplifting.
Jan. 3, 1:49 p.m.: A vehicle was seen running a red light, and was pulled over on Charles River Road. When the officer ran the driver’s record he discovered that the driver had two warrants and an expired registration. The 27-year-old Waltham man was arrested on the two warrants, both from Waltham District Court, both for for driving without a license. He was cited for the red light violation.
Jan. 4, 11:30 a.m.: A local oil company reported that they delivered oil to a business in town and the check they received for the $804.77 payment had bounced on Nov. 19. Police went to the business and spoke to the owner, who made a payment over the phone. The person who wrote the check was the store manager, who police found was wanted on a warrant. The 52-year-old Plymouth man was arrested on the warrant from Waltham District Court for larceny by check over $1,200.
Jan. 6, 12:38 a.m.: An officer patrolling on Edward Road spotted a vehicle swerve violently, but when the officer checked the road there was no visible object or hazard. The officer followed the vehicle, which came up to a red light at Main and Lexington streets and jammed on its breaks suddenly right before the intersection. The vehicle was pulled over and while doing so the pickup jumped the curb and the wheel went up on the sidewalk. The officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath and showed other signs of impairment. The driver failed four field sobriety tests, and said he did not have his license with him. Police discovered his license had been revoked and the driver he had a previous OUI conviction. The 57-year-old Malden man was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol — a second offense, driving with a revoked license — a third offense, and was cited for failing to stop.
Incidents
Jan. 2, 8:50 p.m.: Police received a report from Target of a shoplifter who was fleeing the area. The suspect was seen taking a six-pack of beer and a cell phone charger, and place them into a red back pack. He was seen leaving on a bicycle. The suspect was described as an African-American man, 6-feet tall, in his 20s, wearing jeans and a red sweatshirt. Police could not locate him.
Jan. 3, 6:31 p.m.: An officer saw a vehicle take a left from Galen Street onto Watertown Street during the time which that is prohibited. The vehicle was pulled over and when the officer approached he smelled a strong odor of burned marijuana. While speaking to the driver and passenger, the officer noticed a green leafy substance on the passenger’s sweatshirt, as well as in the passenger door handle. Both the driver and the passenger got out of the vehicle and when police searched the car they found six knotted plastic bags with different amounts of what appeared to be marijuana. There was also a digital scale, loose marijuana, and two bottles of Mike’s Hard Lemonade. In total there was about an ounce and a half of marijuana. Both occupants were under 21. The passenger said that the marijuana was his. Police summonsed the passenger, a 20-year-old Watertown man, to Waltham District Court on a charge of possession to distribute a Class D drug. The driver, a 19-year-old Watertown man, was summonsed to Waltham District Court on a charge of a person under age 21 in possession of alcohol.
Jan. 5, 2:41 p.m.: A Norseman Avenue resident was alerted by a neighbor after a loud bang was heard at about 2:20 p.m. The owner came out to find that the front and rear driver-side windows had been shattered. Police found a piece of concrete which they believe was used to smash the widows. Nothing was missing from the vehicle.
