The following information was provided by the Watertown Health Department:
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the 1918 Influenza pandemic that claimed the lives of more than 650,000 Americans and 50 million people worldwide.
This pandemic illustrated how little prepared we were to the threat of influenza and over the next centennial the World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Pubic Health Departments, and vaccine manufacturers worked closely together to develop tools and strategies that monitor, diagnose, prevent, and treat the threat and burden of this virus and increase our preparedness to future pandemics caused by this constantly mutating virus.
The easiest way to protect you and your loved ones from this disease is to get
vaccinated. Every year the Watertown Health Department offers the flu vaccine at its free public flu clinics at the following locations:
Thursday, September 20 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at the Watertown Senior Center (55+)
