The location of the construction project on Main Street, near the Watertown Library, and the area where construction supplies will be stored.
Starting Tuesday, Sept. 5, Traffic on Main Street will likely be slowed due to construction of a new sidewalk and improvements to a crosswalk between the Watertown Library and the Post Office.
The Department of Public Works announced details of the roadwork, which will take place between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Traffic will flow in both directions, but could be delayed by the roadwork. Also, one of the stops for the MBTA’s 70/70A bus will move down the street.
The following information was provided by the Watertown Department of Public Works:
Please be informed that Daigle Electric will be performing construction work on Main Street at the crosswalk between the Post Office and Public Library as part of MassDOT Project 608540; (District 6 – Pedestrian and Bicycle Facility upgrades at various locations).
The project will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018. The project scope includes installation of curb extensions and other appurtenant work to improve pedestrian safety, including cement concrete sidewalks, wheelchair ramps, installing new traffic signs and pavement markings, drainage improvements, granite curbing, and all other incidental work associated with the above work.
• Typical work hours will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Vehicular traffic in both directions will be maintained, however expect delays in the work area.
• Parking restrictions will be in place and enforced in the work area during working hours.
• During the work, the crosswalk on Main Street between the Post Office and Library will be closed and a pedestrian detour will be in place.
• The outbound Route 70/70A MBTA bus stop at Thaxter Street will be moved from before Thaxter Street to after Thaxter Street.
• Please note that there may be lapses in time between drainage installation, road repaving, curbing installation, sidewalk excavation, etc. due to different crews performing different phases of work.
• The Watertown Police will be informed of the construction and its effects. Police details will be present during work hours.

I wish the town would embed the lights that flash IN the crosswalk when a pedestrian initiated crossing button is pushed. The Library to Post Office is a most dangerous location at 4PM on a winter evening and there is a lot of use. Also, the crosswalk across Mt Auburn St in Coolidge Square needs such lights IN the crosswalk to flash since pedestrians are virtually invisible when the sun goes down. Another well used area. And there are others. These embedded lights are advertised as snow plow friendly–why don’t we do a pilot study and see if they hold up? Barbara Ruskin
