The Watertown football team looks headed to the MIAA Div. 4 playoffs for the third year in a row after the Raiders beat Stoneham Friday at Victory Field.
In a key game for the playoff picture, the Middlesex League contest was a back and forth affair, with junior quarterback Deon Smith providing the late heroics.
Watertown fell behind in the first quarter, but in the third quarter, Raiders’ quarterback Deon Smith put the Raiders ahead 7-6 with a 6-yard touchdown run. Zach Rimsa scored on his own 6-yard run in the third to give the Raiders a 14-6 lead.
Stoneham came back to tie the score in the fourth quarter with a touchdown.
With 30 seconds left in the game, Smith ripped off a 45-yard touchdown run to give Watertown the 21-14 win.
The Raiders improved to 4-3, and will find out their seeding and opponent on Sunday. The MIAA seeding procedure uses a complicated formula taking into account not only the team’s wins and losses, but the wins and losses of opponents, and more value is given for a win over a team in a higher division.
According to the Boston Globe’s Power Rankings, Watertown would be seeded sixth in Div. 4 North. Using these rankings the Raiders would play third-seeded Lynnfield, which is 6-1 on the season.
Field Hockey
The WHS field hockey team had no let down after its historic win Wednesday to set the national record for longest unbeaten streak. Junior Kourtney Kennedy scored twice in the Raiders’ 6-0 win over Wakefield at Victory Field on Friday.
Watertown complete a perfect 18-0 regular season, and have only been scored on once. The Raiders, ranked No. 1 in the state by the Boston Globe, will be the No. 1 seed in the MIAA Div. 2 North Section tournament. Seedings will be announced on Nov. 2.
Boys’ Soccer
The Raiders beat Melrose 4-3 at Victory Field on Tuesday with goals from four players at Victory Field. Watertown, 6-10-1, will likely miss out on the state tournament after losing 3-1 to Wakefield on Thursday.
