An 11-year-old boy suffered minor injuries when he was struck by an SUV while on the way to Cunniff School on Wednesday morning.
The incident occurred on Highland Street at Copeland Street at about 7:50 a.m. Wednesday, according to Watertown Police Lt. James O’Connor. The incident was witnessed by the boy’s sister.
The boy was either riding or walking his bicycle across the street when a Jeep Grand Cherokee heading eastbound struck him.
“The child was transported to Children’s Hospital Boston with minor injuries,” O’Connor said.
The boy’s parents were called and responded to the scene.
It appears the vehicle was traveling at a low rate of speed when it struck the boy. The bike and the SUV had minor damage, O’Connor said. Police are investigating the incident.
A crossing guard is assigned to the corner, but the incident occurred before the guard went on duty, O’Connor said.
That intersection is TERRIBLE! No matter how long you stop to look both ways coming up copeland st, you can still get broadsided. Watertown NEEDS to install a 4 way stop there or this will happen more often.
I agree!! There are many dangerous spots on Highland Ave., this intersection being one of them. I would love to see the town shore up safety for pedestrians and bikers on this road. The solution implemented on church street seems effective.
