The following announcement was provided by YardArt Watertown:
YardArt, a month-long outdoor citywide art exhibition taking place in Watertown, has returned for a fifth year this April. Nearly one hundred artworks are on display at homes throughout the city and in public exhibitions at Commander’s Mansion and Gore Place.
YardArt is a community celebration of the inventiveness and the creativity in us all. Displayed pieces showcase the work of professionals, amateurs, hobbyists, adults, children, and students of all ages. Works include sculptures, mobiles, painted and covered materials, lighting displays, and art of all types and sizes.
Public Events
On Sunday, April 13, at 11:00 a.m., the Watertown Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee will lead a third-annual YardArt Bike Ride. Bicyclists should meet in the parking lot behind City Hall, just off the Community Path, for a tour to admire YardArt around the city by bike. All levels are welcome.
On Thursday, April 17, at 1:00 p.m., the public is invited to walk with Liz Helfer, Public Arts & Culture Planner, on a Watertown Walks Walking Tour to explore the homemade art creations of YardArt. Meet in front of City Hall to see a variety of creativity and fun in front yards, porches, and windows. The walking portion of the program will be approximately 30-40 minutes, and attendees are encouraged to walk at a comfortable pace.
Finally, on Tuesday, April 29, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., all are invited to the YardArt Watertown Community Reception at Mosesian Center for the Arts, at 321 Arsenal Street, to meet fellow YardArtists and celebrate creativity in our community. All current and former YardArt creators, plus YardArt fans and supporters, are welcome to be part of this event. The celebration is family friendly for all ages, a cash bar and complimentary snacks will be available, and a free raffle entry will be given to all attendees. RSVP through the link at www.mosesianarts.org/yardart.
Still Time to Participate
Through April, there’s still time to participate with outdoor masterpieces. Residents, institutions, and businesses — in short everyone in the city — is invited to install and display self-made creations in their front yards, windows, or anywhere visible from the street or sidewalk.
YardArt is a project of the newly-designated Watertown Cultural District. Mass Cultural Council, the Commonwealth’s independent state arts agency, approved the city’s application for a cultural district in November 2024. The statewide program is designed to spark local economic growth, strengthen the distinctive local character of communities, and improve the quality of life for families across Massachusetts.
